  • TPA in Australia and how it relates to supply of replacement parts.?

Under the TPA 1974 it is stipulated that an importer has to be able to supply replacement or service parts for any goods that are imported.

Someone was trying to tell me that the parts need to be made available to the general public rather than just authorised service agencies; any company not supplying to the general public is in breach of the law.

I didn't think that this is the case and supplying to service agents meets they obligations under the TPA 1974.

Appreciate it if someone could clarify?

    Many thanks in advance.

  • Fresh vs Frozen Vegetables? Whats better?

I have no doubt that fresh straight out of the garden or off the farm has the most nutritional value. But living in a city the fruit and vegetables that we call fresh are generally far from it. They have generally been picked/harvested and travelled via distribution centre to the supermarket and are at best days and sometimes months old, especially if imported.

Frozen vegetables are snap frozen shortly after being freshly picked, supposedly locking in the nutritional value. Added to this as they are to be frozen shortly after picking/harvesting they can be picked when ripe, whereas 'fresh' produce is picked earlier before it ripens so it will last longer.

So the question is: Is the nutritional value of frozen vegetables better than "fresh" or Viceversa?

  • Help! Sugary substance on fern leaves?

Hi, I have an indoor plant, it tends to sit next to a window and gets direct sunlight. Watering is a little irregular but generally good. It has a sticky sugary exudation all over the fronds. The fronds come out okay but after a while they end up with the sticky substance all over the leaves and on the floor around. The only other thing is there is a couple of round brown small lumps on the leaves that seemed to proceed the start of the sticky material. The ants love the sticky substance. The plant seems pretty healthy otherwise.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. :)

  • Id of spider?

I was walking in the royal national park Sydney the other day and noticed a fine filament, like a spider web, hanging down with about 7 drops of a wine coloured substance at the bottom. It seemed to to be coming from the very tips of the trees about 8 meters above so I don't think it was sap/resin.

Does anyone know what it is?

  • Cattle and the green house effect?

I can't work out why cattle are said to have such a large impact on the greenhouse effect. Sure they produce lots of methane which is about 25 times more potent than CO2. But the methane will only be in the atmosphere for a relatively short period of time before degrading to CO2, which will last a long time.

But look at the complete cycle. The grass stores the Carbon, the cows eat the grass, uses it for energy and for growth producing CO2 as a by product. The grass takes the CO2 stores it as Carbon for the next cow to eat and the cycle continues.

If the number of cattle that are populating the Earth is stable there should be no net gain or loss of CO2. The only net loss or gain in CO2 will come if the population increases or decreases.

No one has yet been able to give me a reason how a stable population of cattle can add to the greenhouse gas effect.

  • The bends in Astronauts?

It is well known that divers have to surface slowly to avoid the bends or DCI due to N2 loading of the tissues. The biggest issue is near the surface where the biggest pressure changes occur.

What about astronauts, they go from a 1 atm pressure to 0 atm when going on a space walk. This would also cause N2 to come out of the tissues causing the bends.

What do the space agencies do to prepare astronauts for space walks so that they don't get bent?

  • Takeovers; 90% stake vs 50% stake. What are the benefits?

As laws change from country to country I am interested in this in an Australian context.

There has been a lot of takeover activity in the market lately.

To gain control of a company you need a stake of greater than 50%. My understanding is that with this stake you can control the company.

However, to change it from a public company to a private company you need to acquire all of the companies shares. If you can get more than 90% of the shares then you can apply to compulsarily acquire the rest of the outstanding shares. So someone with a 10% holding in a company is said to have a blocking share holding.

    Takeovers often fail if a company/person can't get a 90% stake.

Why is this? I am confused as a 50% stake will give the takeover company control. What is the benefit of a shareholder to hold onto a 10% stake given that they have no control over the their investment?

  • Some nice long nails. How long?

As they are all the rage I am thinking of getting some nails; never had nice nails before. I was thinking of gel as I don't like the smell of the acrylic nail shops. A male friend reckons the longer the better. Any advice on how long is sexy? What are the problems of fake nails?
