  • Where have all the political bands gone?

I know a lot of bands have a couple of songs and people like Patti Smith and Neil Young are still doing their thing but where is today's Phil Ochs or Jello Biafra?

I don't believe that music can change anything, I'm just surprised at the lack of politically based anger in music considering the current state of the world.

Why do you think that is?

The only young and consistently political musicians I'm aware of are rappers. Immortal Technique is the most outspoken that I'm aware of: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOINSUWOqyo

    W. Do you know any modern political rock/metal/punk/etc bands or artists? Songs?

  • What are some songs you have to be careful who you play around?

I was pulling into a grocery store yesterday blasting 'Rock N Roll N****r' by Patti Smith, of course a lovely black family just happened to be walking by. Understandably, the father looked at me as if I was total scum. I thought nothing of it until Patti started screaming "N****R, N****R, N****R, N****R!!!" Right before that she sings, "Jimi Hendrix was a n****r. Jesus Christ was a n****r. Jackson Pollock..."

I tried to catch up to them so I could explain but I wasn't quick enough. I don't know what I would have said; "I'm not a racist, you have to believe me," or "You see she's using the word as a compliment and the song isn't racist at all, I promise."

I felt like such a jerk.

    J. Song about jerks?

    The Jerk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oU6SG5Th6Zo

    or

    Jerkin' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLUoFvpl6_M&feature...

    R. Are you like me and so clueless that you've never heard of jerkin' until just now?

    K. Have you ever jerked? Feel free to take this question any way you like.

  • What does Pink Floyd, Megadeth, and Dr. Strangelove have in common?

They all made use of the military term 'megadeath' which means one million deaths.

One of Pink Floyd's early names was The Meggadeaths. Both Floyd and Megadeth probably got their name Stanley Kubrick's 1964 film Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

Q1: Know any other odd connections between otherwise unrelated bands or artists?

Q2: Pink Floyd song of the day?

Q3: Megadeth song of the day?

Q4: Favorite quote from Dr. Strangelove?

  • What do you think of these mashups? (Smashing Pumpkins, Beatles, Metallica, Nirvana, Zeppelin, NIN, & more!)?

I don't know about you, but I love a good mashup. In case you don't know, a mashup is a combination of 2 or more songs created by a DJ or through editing software. Most of the time they are awful but slightly amusing, sometimes they are hilarious, and every now and then they are brilliant.

    Enjoy:

  • What is the most annoying musical experience that you have ever had?

Recently, a neighbor of mine started blasting the 9 minute extended version of Soft Cell's 'Tainted Love' over and over. He played it five times before I high-tailed it in order to avoid getting the electric chair for his murder. And I though my love was tainted before.

  • Who else thought that Neil Young covered Tears For Fears when you saw Donnie Darko?

Or first heard the Gary Jules song 'Mad World'?

    I did.

For those of you who do not know what I'm talking about, a guy named Gary Jules covered a Tears For Fears song called Mad World for the film Donnie Darko. It was a huge hit from what I understand.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N3N1MlvVc4

It is a great cover but I have to pretend it's Neil to enjoy it. I listened to a few other songs and he alternates between Neil Young and Cat Stevens impressions. Frankly, I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of odd. Get your own voice Gary!

  • Am I the only person that finds most Tarantino films annoying?

Someone has to be anti-Tarantino, so I will... He is talented, and I enjoy all of his films but this legendary status he has is not deserved. There is no question that Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction had a positive impact on the mainstream film industry but all he really did was take a bunch of old concepts, mash them up, and recycle them in a modern setting. He has said as much in interviews. I don't necessarily think that is a bad thing but I do think he gets way too much credit.

Watch an interview of Tarantino, then watch any of his films up till Death Proof. Almost every character talks in exactly the same manner, exactly like Tarantino himself. Watching Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction is like watching Tarantino possess every character and talk to himself a lot. He never wrote a real character, they were all just Tarantino: as a hitman. as a boxer, et frakkin cetera. he was the only character in any of his moves. I can't be the only one who sees this, sure they look different:; black, white, male female... But they all talk just like him! With the same cadence even! Am I the only one who finds this annoying?

Inglourious Basterds is the first truly great film he has made in my opinion. It actually has characters in it, what a concept?!

  • Is Death the first all black punk band?

    (Not the death metal band)

Bad Brains? Think again. Death was formed in 1971 and released just one single in 1975. For whatever reason, the album they made was never released until 2009. They were really ahead of their time and are definitely the 'punkiest' proto-punk band I've ever heard.

  • What are some unfortunate band names?

    like Brokeback.

They were actually a decent band, made up of members of Tortoise, Stereolab, & Yo La Tengo.

Here's one of their songs if you're interested, it reminds me of the Twin Peaks theme.

  • Do you cook salad for breakfast? Or know any songs from one genre about another?

Like Beck's Nitemare Hippy Girl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTnEGk2HSLc

She took me off my guard,

    with disappointment.

    I got sucked inside

    of her apartment.

    She's got dried up flowers,

    and flaky skin,

    a beaded necklace,

    and a bottle of gin.

    She's a nightmare hippy girl,

with her skinny fingers fondling my world.

    She's a whimsical, tragical beauty,

    self-conscious and a little bit...

    groovy.

    It's new-aged let down,

    in my face.

    She's so spaced out,

    that there ain't no space.

    She got marijuana

    on the bathroom tile.

    I'm caught in a vortex,

    she's changing my style.

    She's a nightmare hippy girl,

with her skinny fingers fondlin' my world.

    She's a whimsical, tragical beauty,

    uptight and a little bit...

    snooty.

    She's a magical, sparklin' tease.

She's a rainbow chokin' the breeze.

Yo, she's busting out onto the scene,

    with nightmare bogus poetry.

She's a melted avocado on the self.

    She's a science of herself.

She's spazzing out on a cosmic level,

and she's meditating with the devil.

    She's cooking salad for breakfast.

She's got tofu the size of Texas.

She's a witness to her own glory.

    She's a never ending story.

    She's a frolicking depression.

    She's a self inflicted obsession.

She's got a thousand lonely husbands.

She's playin' footsy in another dimension.

She's a goddess for milkin' the time,

    for all that it's worth.

  • Are there any rock/metal/punk bands from Africa?

I just realized that I've never even heard about any.

BQ: What was the last band you listened to just because they were from a specific country/continent? I went to see Hypernova recently because they were from Iran and had to overcome all kinds of oppression to achieve the moderate success they've had....

I wish I had watched this first: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_sxsKBVJDE

I wasn't impressed. I kept wishing I went to the free Grand Funk Railroad show that lacked their lead singer. At least I could have sung along.
