What are some songs you have to be careful who you play around?

I was pulling into a grocery store yesterday blasting 'Rock N Roll N****r' by Patti Smith, of course a lovely black family just happened to be walking by. Understandably, the father looked at me as if I was total scum. I thought nothing of it until Patti started screaming "N****R, N****R, N****R, N****R!!!" Right before that she sings, "Jimi Hendrix was a n****r. Jesus Christ was a n****r. Jackson Pollock..."

I tried to catch up to them so I could explain but I wasn't quick enough. I don't know what I would have said; "I'm not a racist, you have to believe me," or "You see she's using the word as a compliment and the song isn't racist at all, I promise."

I felt like such a jerk.

R. Are you like me and so clueless that you've never heard of jerkin' until just now?

K. Have you ever jerked? Feel free to take this question any way you like.

Update:

Migh: Speaking of jerks, why do you always have to point out how you asked a similar question before I did? Can you even hear me from way up there on your high horse? :)

Remember these?

My first thought when i read your question was to post that Patti Smith song. I've had a similar experience with that track when i used to manage a comic book shop many moons ago. The owner was a big Patti fan and would play 'Easter' continually when he was about. As our main custom was black i used to feel anxious knowing that song was going to be played. As you mentioned, it's very difficult to explain the sentiments behind the song.

I don't think the sentiment behind it is meant to be racist, i wouldn't listen to it if i thought it was, but it certainly could be taken the wrong way.

No Hope Kids by means of Wavves I just like the Yoko. I could as an alternative have the Yoko shrieking than the Yoko intercourse sounds however I'm mature and all of us lead them to so that is not the intent I'm balloting for the opposite. I simply fairly just like the Wavves. It's some thing I'd mainly have in heavy rotation if I had it. So, I wager I'll be getting it. You Dissolve by means of The Thermals Maybe in opposition to another track On a Highway could've been extra attractive to me. I fairly loved You Dissolve and I feel that I could have recognise the ones youngsters within the video while I used to be 12 or thirteen. "Come Monday Night" by means of Stuart Murdoch I feel this track is fine. It sounds variety of Ye-ye. The Modest Mouse is a repetitive drone. I Knew by means of Lightning Dust Sophie's alternative. The Visitor" by means of Jim O'Rourke The different one turns out meh.

The Worst Hangover Ever by the offspring

might be very offensive to the people with a hangover, you shouldn't play it around them.

you're not a jerk, it's ok when black people call each other ****@z and suddenly it's not ok when white folks do it. It's not the word, it's what meaning you put into it, that word now means nothing, it doesn't hold anyone back, it's used almost as "bro" now.

Whoopi Goldberg said it best about these ridiculous verbal games. "I love words, I love playing with words and now there's a whole list of words for me not to say. The N-word. The N-word, that's what we have to call it now....I was ok with Negr0. I was fine with Black. Now I'm African-American. I'm afraid of what's coming next. Really tired of changing what we are." her whole piece on the matter was brilliant, actually.

K I have jerked. Feel free to interpret that answer any way you want.

  • Not recently, though in my youth, likely all the time.

I learned long ago, that if you live the life I have chosen to, you have to be conscious at all times, as much as possible of how people will take things. As annoying as it is, Perception IS Reality for most people.

Such as with your song.... no matter what you likely said, no matter the Reality of the song, that family, and likely many others, white, black and otherwise who hear it, won't take time to listen and learn the context, and so the reality is they will all perceive you as a racist. (Though conversely, a black guy bumpin hip-hop can have the word tossed out 20 times a minute, and while it might not be perceived as "high class" it is not taken the same way.)

Back to my point, for whatever reason, if a person who is not one of Jehovah's Witnesses commits some vile crime, the papers don't feel the need to list (John a Catholic / Jew / Hindi / Whatever) their religious affiliation. Yet if a person was ever once in any way associated with Jehovah's Witnesses (Micheal Jackson, Damon Wayons, the Williams sisters, all of whom, for the record, are NOT JWs), somehow that is in every article, whether accurate or not. So for whatever reason, by choosing to be one I know I am under greater scrutiny.

Not saying this as some superiority thing, or anything like that (or that I am somehow less prone to screwing up, etc.. cuz I'm not, I have a temper, words do occasionally slip, etc), just to point out WHY I don't do certain things. Imagine the look I would get if I pull up next to "average joe" family in my car, suit on, Watchtower magazines on my dash, and "The Number of the Beast" BLARING from my car stereo. Then the next day, I knock on their door. *Facepalm*

Mind you.. the song is NOT promoting Satanism. But the PERCEPTION is that it does, and so, it becomes reality. So, in their eyes, I become a hypocrite. (as opposed to A, Yeah You, and several others here, who feel I am for disagreeing with them).

    J. Doesn't "Creep" by Radiohead say something like "cuz I'm a Jerk"?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzjUjNPYzLg

    R. YEs. The Urban Dictionary rescued me, but my knowledge of dance is so limited, I am not surprised. Is ti related to "poppin"?

    K. Yes. When I got tasered (when I was like 18) I jerked and flopped like that fish at the end of "Epic" by Faith No More.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERTT_sv8sV0

@Ape.. OMG!!! How'd you find out! Except they spliced in some fake audio.. I wasn't saying "What'd I do.. but "Nananan-Booboo!" Those cops have NO sense of humor! What a shock?

I'm the lone female smoker where I work, and when I take a smoke break I have to go out to the warehouse, which is normally populated with a variety of unsavory, rough-and-tumble, grease monkey types of guys.

They usually have the radio playing, and on several occasions I have been out there smoking and Van Halen's version of "You Really Got Me" came on, complete with the simulated orgasm. VERY awkward when you're the only girl in a sea of manly-men.

That really has nothing to do with your question, but it's the first thing I thought of.

The kids get embarrassed when I play my "Hair" tape in the car too loudly - specifically "Colored Spade" and "Yes, I's Finished".
