  • Why is my gardenia drooping?

It's a well established plant. The leaves are nice and green, and it's flowering normally, but it's also drooping severely. It doesn't need water, it has been in the same location for years, I can't see any sign of bugs, but sprayed it just to be sure... Ideas?

  • Can anyone offer pointers on getting a really cheap bike?

We're broke, but my girlfriend wants a bike and I agree 100 percent. Just something to get her some fresh air, exercise, and generally get her out of the house and give her some freedom (she doesn't have a car or driver's license). It doesn't need to be anything fancy, but every article on google says that, if you buy a cheap bike, it will burst into flame the first time you ride it. I don't buy that, and even if I did it's either a burning bike or no bike.

She'd ride it on good pavement, five miles round trip max. Cost is really the limiting factor. Is there any possible way I can get something for 50 bucks or less?

  • Where can I find a cheap engagement ring setting?

I have the diamond, just over 3/4 carat. I'm really on a budget, but I'd like to find a 14K yellow gold setting. Ideas?

  • is aries the best zodiac sign?

Don't take this too seriously (Lord knows I don't). Just wondering. It seems that Aries is supposed to control the world, command respect, etc., and get along with almost every other sign. I have a bet with a Capricorn girl. I don't care if she proves me wrong, so hit it. ;)

  • Am I doing something wrong with my 8-inch dobsonian telescope?

I bought an Orion XT8 after messing around with a hand-me-down refractor (no more details than that, except that I think it was a Meade or Bushnell, and I doubt it cost more than 100 or 150 bucks new) for several years. I have the 25mm eyepiece that it came with, and I also bought a "zoom" lens that I think goes from about 4 to 25mm.

I live about 3 miles outside of a mid-sized city. The sky is black to the south, north, and west; it's light-polluted to the east. I've also taken the scope to places where the light pollution is minimal (all of the stars of Cancer were easily visible, if that means anything).

I'm kind of disappointed. I wasn't expecting Hubble-style images or anything, but... now I can see two red bands around Jupiter, three on a good night. Saturn is more or less the same white blob as in the refractor, except that the rings are tilted more this year and I can see Titan and probably some of the other moons. The only feature I'm really pleased with is the Orion Nebula. Andromeda was a big sigh.

I read tales of people using scopes like mine from, I don't know, NYC or something, seeing better than what I'm seeing. Talk of Great Red Spots and Cassini Divisions and whatnot. Great Red Spots and Cassini Divisions seem like a pipe dream to me, since I can barely see the equatorial bands and rings at all.

As near as I can tell, the collimation is fine. So... am I doing something wrong?

  • Can someone recommend a good ghost tour in St. Augustine?

I've been on two there, but it has been years. One had a gent that carried a lantern on a hook because his hand had been bitten off while working at the Gator Farm; that one was great. The other came free with a carriage ride; that one was awful. I don't remember which company either tour was with.

I'm looking for a nice 50/50 mix of quirky history and ghost stories, and is very bangbangbang. St. Augustine has tons of both, so there's no need to stop at only three places and tell three 30-minute stories at each place. More like 15 minutes at the fort, 10 minutes at the cemeteries, some good stories while walking, that sort of thing. It'll just be two adults going, and it'll be on a Monday, so Sheriff's (and whoever else) will be closed.

    Any help is much appreciated.

  • Good conceal carry pistol for me?

My number one criteria is "something I can grab when I'm late for work and rushing out of the house and keep with me all day with minimal discomfort."

I've determined that anything I'm looking for will be too small for my hands, but I'd rather buy a little gun and practice with and adjust to it rather than buy a larger gun that I won't carry. I can handle at least a 9mm or a .38 with no problem.

Bear with me here... I'm not an idiot, but I always get single-, double- and single-double-action confused. I'd prefer the one where you rack the slide, and every pull feels the same from first to last.

And "it goes bang." That's it. Cost is only a minor issue. Stopping power isn't an issue. Capacity isn't an issue. I'm a fairly large gent, and I'll take my chances against an assailant with a single 9mm slug in them.

  • What is causing no power to an electrical outlet?

My stepsister came for Thanksgiving, plugged in her industrial-strength hair dryer, and fried my electrical system back to a GCFI breaker. It actually blew up the GCFI too, but I replaced that, and now I have power going in to the new GCFI, and power coming out. A lamp works when I plug it into the new GCFI outlet.

Unfortunately, everything downstream of the GCFI is still out. There is no power to the outlet the hair dryer was plugged into, which is either the first or second outlet down from the GCFI. By "no power to the outlet," I mean that everything, even the wiring, to that outlet is dead as can be.

Would there be anything on the happy side of changing the wiring that would fix this? Thanks.

  • Where is the best place on St. Croix to buy cigarettes?

Google just brings up a bunch of shady websites offering duty-free smokes. Grr. I'm not as familiar with STX as I am with the other Virgins, but I'm guessing that Kmart is five bucks per carton more than somewhere else on the island. Help please?

  • Can someone please identify this snake?

Found today in the Florida panhandle. Under my front deck to be specific. I'm a little nervous about the answer I'm going to receive, but this one is a different color than the others, so maybe I'll get lucky. http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp270/kilroy76/...

  • How do I convert an outboard from tiller to remote throttle/steering?

I have a small boat that needs a new outboard. I found one at a great price, but it is set up for remote steering/throttle and does not have a tiller handle. My boat does not have room to install a console with a steering wheel, so I was wondering if they make a small box that could be mounted to the side of the boat that would handle both steering and throttle.

I don't need info on specific brands or part numbers or anything. If you could maybe just post a link to a representative control box of the type I'm describing, that would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Yahoo Answers took away my top contributor icon a few days after awarding it to me. I feel that I have been dishonored and that the world should suffer as a result. Help with planning/execution?

  • Who is the most overrated actor/actress?

My vote is Nicolas Cage. If I see his pretty blue eyes and hear his sissy voice in another action movie, they're going to need an action hero to keep me from destroying Hollywood.

  • Animal rights people, how would you deal with this situation?

Anyone can answer (of course), but I'm curious what people who "wouldn't hurt a fly" would do.

I had an Eastern Diamondback coiled around a flower pot right next to my front door. My fiancee nearly kicked it/stepped on it before we knew it was there. I spent a half hour chasing it through the azalea bushes down the length of the house and managed to chop off its head with a shovel. Then I drank bourbon. It was a beautiful snake, tan with reddish-brown diamonds, between five and six feet long, and I felt kind of bad about killing it, especially since it was relatively well-behaved.

What I did was very dangerous. Trying to trap it would have been much more dangerous because I have no experience. It takes 20-30 minutes to get to the hospital from here, and I put the odds of that hospital having anti-venom at 50-50. It's another two hours (by car) to a hospital that I know has anti-venom. Letting it go free, knowing that it likes being near the house, was out of the question by my way of thinking. I have never successfully convinced Animal Control to even come get a stray dog or litter of kittens, and I've heard that they won't deal with anything other than cats and dogs, so calling them was out of the question (my tax dollars at work).

I have since had a baby Diamondback on the railing of my back deck (yes, they're born with a full load of venom), and the neighbors have reported pigmy rattlers and water moccasins. My question is, with pigmy rattlers, cottonmouths and that baby's siblings around, what am I supposed to do? I don't like killing them; I just can't think of any other way to ensure that I don't lose a dog, a limb, or worse. Would you do the same?

  • Why is there sleet falling on my house in Florida right now?

Why is there a chance that it will change to snow this morning? I have had it with this crummy winter and I want it to be over. Is anyone with me? Do we need to write our congressmen or something?

  • What is President Obama's greatest accomplishment?

He has been president for more than a year with Democrat-controlled House and Senate. What has he changed that most impressed you? If you can answer without saying "Bush," I might just give you ten points.

(Conservatives, you can refrain since I'm completely in agreement with any argument you could give me. I just want to know what Obama's supporters consider to be his greatest accomplishment to date. No conservative is getting a best answer.)

  • Will I need to re-waterproof my deck?

I applied a waterproofing stain to my deck yesterday and it unexpectedly rained this morning. The product tells me not to apply it if rain is expected within 24 hours. Depending on the part of the deck, the stain has only been drying for 18-22 hours. Will I need to re-do it?

  • Is baseball as confusing to cricket fans as cricket is to baseball fans?

I love baseball, but I can't figure out rule one of cricket (and the terminology is just baffling). All I know is that the bowler throws the ball, that the batsman holds a flattened bat and that there's a peg behind the batsman.

I was just wondering if baseball is equally confusing to cricket fans. If I said "the hitter popped out to short on a full-count hanging slider," would that sound really really stupid to a cricket fan? I assume it would...

  • Does anybody know what poem this is?

I think it describes the retreat of Napoleon's army, or at least a component of it, from Russia. It had all the usual drama, like the cold, starvation, kossacks, etc.

I remember liking it when I was in high school, but since high school gets fainter and fainter every day, I can't remember much else about it.
