  • Does writing on a will invalidate it?

My dad's will has an heir's name written incorrectly. His daughter's middle initial is written as "L" when it should be "J." My sister wrote the correction on the will and both she and my father signed and dated where the change was made. I'm guessing that this was not the proper way to do it. I'm anticipating conflict among the heirs anyway and I don't want to provide any ammunition to challenge the will.

Should the will be kept as is (with the writing on it) or should the will be completely re-written, or at least a codicil added to note the correction for the proper name?

  • Should an adult intervene in a fight involving children?

A few months ago I chanced upon a group of boys around the ages of 12-13 beating up another boy pretty badly. I called the police but these kids inflicted some major damage before the police came.

As a stranger and a 51 year old man, if I had tried to physically restrain the attackers, who were minors, could I have faced any sort of charges?

  • Confused about who can use PX at military bases?

My dad is a Navy vet who never used the PX system before for buying things.

The base website says the following about eligibility:

Honorably Discharged Veterans when hospitalized or certified 100% disabled.

If you are an honorably discharged vet who was not injured/disabled, then you don't have any base PX privileges?

  • Credit Card Judgement: Is it legal to pull your own money from bank account?

I'm answering a question in another forum and not sure if this is correct:

A person is being sued by their credit card company over a default and they expect to loose...and a judgement of at least $5,000.

They have a bank account with an average balance of $1,500 for living expenses. With a judgement the creditor will be able to freeze the account and take all the money.

Question: Is there anything illegal about pulling out the $1,500 in cash prior to going to court and putting that money in a safe at home to keep the creditors from getting the money from the judgement?

  • How long do negative items stay on your credit report?

Okay, I've notice that many people are giving incorrect answers on this issue...including many "Top Contributor" old timers.

Negative items like loan or credit card defaults stay on your credit report for 7 years (technically 7.5 years) starting from THE ORIGINAL DEFAULT DATE or date of first delinquency that led to the default...NOT the date of the last payment on the account.

Don't confuse this with the statute of limitations, which is a completely separate time period which can be restarted by payments on the account.

  • Do large HTML pages damage SEO?

Most of my pages are in the 150K to 250K. I've heard that pages should generally be below 100K.

Should I try to get my page sizes down? I offer products and I need to have JPEG images of the products so reducing the size is an issue.

  • Can a hospital refuse to treat an uninsured patient?

I know that ERs are required by law to treat any patient that walks through the door and at least get them stabilized, regardless of ability to pay.

Say that an uninsured 30 year man comes to the ER with acute appendicitis and needs an emergency appendectomy. Can the hospital refuse further treatment (like the operation) if they feel that they won't get paid, even if the patient's life may be in danger?

  • In the Emergency Room, do I have the right to tell doctors to not give my mother specific medicines?

My 82 year old mother fell, which was initially thought to be a seizure but was later diagnosed to be a mini stroke. She had horrible reactions to the seizure medications that they initially gave her in the hospital and I never want her to have those ever again.

    - Should she ever need to be hospitalized, as her son do I have the right to tell attending physicians that I do not want my mother to be given seizure medications under any circumstances, even if they want to?

  • Can credit card companies charge interest after you pay balance in full?

Being an old timer on this board I should know the answer to this....

I bought a laptop for $450 on my CapitalOne card. I paid the entire balance in full and on time, leaving a statement balance of $0 and I did not use the card after that.

Yesterday I got a text alert that my account was $9.45 past due....$4.45 in interest and a $5.00 past due fee. I thought that when you paid your account off in full and on time that interest would not accrue. I just barely caught this from going 30 days past due, to where this would have hit my credit report. Anyone know anything about this?

  • Family member is stealing...what to do?

A relative of mine, an adult of 35 years old, became addicted to drugs and stole his elderly grandmother's heirloom wedding rings and other jewelry, which was sold to a pawn shop. We were able to independently verify that he did in fact steal the items.

He is now "supposedly" off drugs. He refuses to acknowledge that he stole the jewelery and has denied it when directly confronted. The issue is now ignored and we go about holidays as if it never happened.

  • Could a co-owner of a house get a 2nd mortgage loan without the other co-owners permission?

Scenario: A house is jointly owned by a brother and sister. The house is fully paid off.

The sister's husband has a long history of liquidating assets and getting 2nd mortgages on homes....including a recent foreclosure.

Question: Is the brother safe from having the value of this house liquidated by his sister and brother-in-law getting 2nd mortgages on the house by themselves?

  • Foreclosure vs. Short Sale: Is this correct?

When a person looses a house to foreclosure, the bank/creditor can never come back and try to collect on amount that they lost on the loan...so a foreclosure sort of erases the debt like bankruptcy and the person will never have to worry about the debt again. With a short sale, the bank CAN come back and try to collect on the amount of the loan that they wrote off.

Is my understanding of this issue correct?

  • Teeth very sensitive to drilling: Does Nitrous Oxide help?

For whatever reason, my teeth are highly sensitive to drilling. Even with multiple injections of Novocaine the pain is excruciating. My problem is not dental anxiety...it's oversensitive teeth. Would Nitrous Oxide be of any help when I have 2 cavities filled in 4 weeks?

  • Does getting a crown involve drilling the tooth?

I had a root canal last week and the dentist wants to put a crown on the tooth.

My teeth are super-sensitive to drilling. I had a cavity filled today and I had to stop the dentist 3 times to get extra shots of Novocaine..and that still did not stop the pain/sensitivity of the drilling.

So, will the dentist have to drill my tooth in any way to put the crown on?

  • Past 20 Years: Any historically "great" rock bands?

I know this is subjective, but in the past 20 years have there been any rock bands that can even be put in the same league with Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Joplin, The Doors and Hendrix?

Nirvana is the only one I can think of....Any other groups?
