Letter in a bottle supposedly from 1961?
A letter in a bottle that was supposedly thrown into the sea in 1961 has supposedly been washed up somewhere in U.K.
It was thrown into the sea with the aim of it arriving in America but it has supposedly washed up on U.K shores 60 years later.
Part of the note in it says "Roy Orbison is beginning to kick off here"
Sounds to me like someone in 2021 thought of someone from the early 60's and Roy Orbison sprang to mind.
Do you think this is just a 2021 attention seeking stunt ? i.e he found an old bottle and decided to write out a note supposedly from 1961 and then phone the media ?
Just to clarify, the bottle was thrown into the sea in U.K with the aim of it reaching USA. After 60 years it is supposed to have washed back onto U.K shore. So presumably having gone all the way around the British Isles
" Prevailing Atlantic Ocean currents bring things from the USA and Canada to the UK, not the other way around. An educated person is likely to have known that in 1961."
Yes, to reach USA it would have to be dropped in the sea off Spain or North Africa as the currents would take it to Cuba and maybe Florida....the route Columbus took. The North Atlantic current is in reverse from USA to U.K.

I was a teen in the U.K. 1960s and the term kick off was not part of our language then.
It's fraudulent.

I can think of a lot more US artists who would have been deemed to be rising stars than Roy O, who was already moderately successful for a few years before this note was written, but without a publicist was still relatively low profile. He only really became big after touring the UK (with the Beatles) in '63 and the release of Pretty Woman the following year. I think it is a scam.

Sounds like someone has made all this up

The language used in the sentence: "Roy Orbison is beginning to kick off here" is not language that would have been used in in this context in 1961.
Prevailing Atlantic Ocean currents bring things from the USA and Canada to the UK, not the other way around. An educated person is likely to have known that in 1961.
It is not a story I had heard about but I find it unconvincing based on what you have said.

I assume they can test the paper and ink - there are big differences between technologies of today and 60 years ago. As it stands it does sound, ahem, fishy.
