How to answer a 7 year olds question of,What is war?

Today in Australia is Anzac day and we have many services through out the Country. We are fortunate to have The Duke of Cambridge

[ Prince William ]and Princess Kate with us attending one of the services at the Australian war memorial in Canberra. It is televised on our Tv chanels here and many school children take part. I found it difficult to answer my granddaughters question of "What is war". when there is a lot of answers but I couldn't simplify it in a 7 year olds mind. How would you answer.

Tell him "it is when a group of people disagree so they fight with each other, war is very bad".. really.. it is best to just break it to him so he learns what the real world is like. I mean he is 7, not too young, he will grow up in not too long now so i think its best to tell him so he knows.

Hard question to answer. I do not remember reading Australia in any former war.

The last WAR the world had was WW2.

Everything since then is Police Actions. Not war.

I suggest you keep it very simple. War happens when two countries can't agree and can't come up with a better solution to solve their problems.. He already knows that war is a fight. I can remember being so small that I thought it was a card game.

Tell her the truth. That war is a silly, cruel thing that happens when grown ups in different countries have a big argument. It is the worst thing that can happen and no one really wins.

Keep it simple. A war is when countries fight each other.

Just tell them the truth, that it's organized murder.

To make it simple, where there is war, you lost your love ones, your daddy, mummy, grandpa, grandma, brothers and sisters, your homes, breakdown in transport etc.

War is what happens when a powerful group of people decide that their money or technology or advantageous geographical location is a "Sign From God"--wars are almost always caused by religious "authorities"--which gives them a "Divine Right" to murder a weaker group of people and destroy their culture and steal their property. And this crime is ALWAYS committed with displays of lots of flags and parades and celebrations of "heroes" and jabbering in the popular press about "liberating" the people who are being murdered and "defending" the predators from the "aggression" of the victims.
