I've been getting my Social Security check every month since I turned 62.

Anything that a person gets will be based on what they paid in the system from the time they entered the workforce.  That is where pension money comes from - it is the person's own money that was taken from them (many years ago and FOR many years). It went into a government account of some kind and was slowly growing in value to keep pace with inflation over the years. That money is eventually used to pay the weekly pensions of elderly people who can no longer go out to work for money.  Anyone who has PAID INTO a pension scheme will be due a regular payout once they retire. People who did not plan ahead and never did pay into any kind of retirement plan might, in some countries, be left destitute.  In others, those who never paid

in might still be able to receive benefit but it might not be the same amount (because they did not contribute.)  In U.K. no-one is allowed to be destitute and go hungry but, in some countries they might, and then they'll have to rely on the charitable help of relatives, friends or organizations.
