Ways to distract an arab?
My arab has been in his stable yard for 2 years without a problem. Apart from leaning on a few fences trying to get the grass on the other side, pruning and digging up a few tree roots- I think he was a landscaper in a past life.
Recently the new stable boarder had a wooden post fence built, replacing the fence between her horse (a known wooden fence chewer) and my 9yo arab. My horse's yard is now a quarter of the size it was (he has gone from having the largest yard to the smallest) and the stable owner has no intention of removing that temporary fence.
Yesterday I discovered that my horse has started chewing the old wooden post by his gate- really stripping the outer layer off it and dropping the strips onto the ground. I believe he is doing this for two reasons- the other horse, a former pacer, has taught him, and due to no longer being able to run about in his yard so he's bored.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to distract him from his new post munching habit, apart from painting the fence with something nasty? Any toys I could make at home? He has a basketball and a football to play with (he's more interested in the football).
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Sadly there is not much I can do to get his yard put back to the size it was nor available yard to shift him to, and there is no other stable or agistment centre in town I could move him to. If there was, I would certainly move him The new boarder is friends with the stable owner so can basically do what she wants. Also, since she paid $7000 for this fence to be built, she thinks she has more than a little to say in the running of the stable, yet filling up her own horse's water trough is below her- twice this week she's left him with zero water. She's really not a nice person to be around.

I've tried making homemade toys at home but it never really works as well as a bought one. Your arab might benefit from having a Likit boredom breaker or something.
Go on this site. They're products are designed to occupy bored horses.
Can your horse see other horses from his stable? I know it's not that simple to just change stables but maybe if he was somewhere more open he'd be more chilled out.
You can get this liquid to spray on wood which makes it taste bad so that horses don't want to chew it. I forget what it's called now but if you asked about it at a hardware shop. B&Q might have it but a horsey superstore would be best.
Have a look at the Likit things. They're a bit on the pricey side but they work.
I hope that your horse becomes more settled soon! :)

I don't see why she is being allowed to down-size your space seeing as your paying the same, just because her horse has a vice.
You shouldn't have to make allowances for someone else's selfish behaviour.
You should speak to the yard owner about having your horse's run restored to what it was.
As for toys and treats, he will quickly get bored of those and go back to chewing the fence, he needs to be able to stretch his legs.
Is there no grazing where you are? It would be a lot better for him to be out every day instead of in just a run.

You could try wrapping chicken wire or something around the wooden posts- that might help stop his chewing and stripping a bit. Footballs are good- when my arabian pony thinks he's alone, he picks up his football by the laces and swings it around. It's pretty funny to see.
Perhaps you could try attaching a brush head to where he chews, with the bristles facing the horse. He might rub against the brush and find that more enjoyable than chewing the fence.
Good luck!

Horses are not so likely to chew on Oak or other hard wood, If you could get some strips of that to put up along side the posts that may make him stop or get some old soft pine pole and put horisontially near where he chews and let him have at it.

Toys!!! Yes, horses like toys just as much as kids. There are some toys that have fod in, and they have to be creative to get the treat out, salt lick could also be considered. Big soft balls, maybe a little trick training, random safe objects, something that will catch the horses interest.

Try getting a big horse ball, horses love to play with them, allso if you get a salt lick or something then he would be more interested in that, you could alos try giving him a bit of hay. I think that he is proberly doing it because hes bored now the yard is smaller if it continues you may want to consider changing yards, horses need thier space.

he is bored.
alleviate that and give him something more constructive to do.
when smart horses are confined and not given anything to do, image the intense boredom. it's like if you spent all day every day in 1 room forever.
how would you feel?
bored out of your mind.
your horse is too smart for this kind of life. exercise, he should spend more time outside of that pen, or move him to where he can have a buddy.
you can try toys, but I doubt that'll work. he sounds too smart to be amused by inanimate objects.

I don't hate any group of people without reason. I don't think that all Arabs or muslims hate America. Sometimes people base their opinions off of what has been told to them by the media. I don't.

I wa told today to hang small coke bottle,2/3rds full with water and hang from rafter of his shed,at about head height,on a piece of string.Horse usually will play with it ? all day...Definitly bored witless.I ve used those poly type 44 gallon drums & 20 litre containers,They kick them around paddock.People go off about cruelty to caged hens.Nobody complains about caged horses.probably because they don t lay eggs...good luck
