Temporary solution to cat urine smell?
Are there any temporary solutions to getting the cat urine smell out of a room. We plan to do the whole rip up carpet, reseal floor, put new carpet down thing, but is there a way to cut down on the smell beforehand? We don't have the funds to get new carpeting quite yet and I can't even walk into our one room because it smells so bad (and I'm allergic to cats). Anything that can help is appreciated.

The problem with cat or dog urine on the carpet is not the carpet itself, but the pad under it.
You can use some of the urin away products found in pet stores on the carpet, but you need to pull the carpet back & use that stuff on the pad too.
Another alternative is to buy a 1 or 2 yard piece of padding (because there's always more spots than you knew of), pull the carpet back & cut out the pad that is soaked.
Before you put the carpet back over it, place a trainer pad between the carpet & pad. I have seen the trainer pads at Wal-Mart in the pet section.

there are a few things that work..
Wash the are thoroughly with warm water and vinegar daily for a week or so and it will help.
Leave a couple containers of open baking soda in the room these will help absorb the odors.
boil orange and lemon szest in water for a minute and then strain the water. use this water with vinegar to clean the carpet and it will help as well.
if you still have the cats you might as well get rid of them. once they start peeing in one spot it is almost impossible to make them stop. also if it was another cat and you have a cat it will pee there to try and get rid of the other cats odor.

I own four cats and the only cleaner I have found to work quite well is nature's miracle. They come in many different sized bottles at most pet stores. You just squirt it on and scrub for a minute with a towel. It eliminates the odor and my cats don't go on that spot anymore. I find it so useful that I've begun using it for other spills and spots on the carpet.

Since the odor is in the carpet and you are going to replace it. Tear up the carpet and use clorox bleach and water to clean the floor. The smell will be gone and you will be ready for the new carpet.

Have you tried steam cleaning the carpet?
They have special cleaning liquid that is
made just for pet smells. You might try
just putting down baking soda and let it
sit overnight. Or the scented baking soda
for carpet.

Out! stain and odor remover works GREAT for me! It is a spray that appears to neutralize the ammonia in the cat's urine. Definitely worth a try!

Theres a product called Nature's Miracle that can be purchased at any pet store for about $10 or so. Its a concentrated liquid that is squirted on carpet then vacuumed up.Works pretty good, in my opinion.

sprinkle the rug with arm and hammer carpet deoderizer and then vaccum it up. it took care of our cat urine problem for a week and we keep using it....it works great! you can get it at the supermarket and it comes in different scents....

Human urine neutralizes the smell of cat urine. If you don't want to just pee on the carpet you could go into the bathroom and go in a container.
