  • Why do people try to smuggle their children into group photographs?

Recently after a graduation ceremony, there was a photo to be taken of  the class. However one of the graduates wanted his child (maybe 5 or six) standing next to him in our group photo. He had also tried to take the child to receive his award, but been thwarted at the stage by the organisers.

While I understand that their children are important to their parents, family photos were available separately.

Some tried to cancel their group photo order...

Why do these people insist to include their children in such photographs thereby spoiling the photo for others? What is the driving force behind this? I am trying to understand the situation so I can be prepared in future.

wa innaka haa zil zam vil 'aliimi

  • Archeology: How is ivory statues age determined?

It says that archeologists in Germany have discovered an ivory statue that is 35,000 years old. I am interested to know, how can the age of the statue be identified this way? What I mean is, the ivory may be 35000 years old and the statue made recently. How do the scientists tell (by carbon dating) the difference between the age of the ivory and when the statue was made?

  • Should I correct my two-and a half year old with her words?

My nearly three year old often mixes up words or interchanges syllables, when I try to teach her "This old man" she sings the chorus as

"Knick Knack, Knacky Knack, Knicker Knacker Bore"

Of if I tickle her saying Goochie Goochie, she responds Chugie Chugie

Should I correct her or will it pass?

  • Where is the equal and opposite force to W?

My brother used to catch those who understand physics and those who just memorize it with this question.

There is a table. On the table is a chair. On the chair is an object (say a stone) which weighs W kg. The stone has a force R acting on it and it in turn applies a force R on the chair. Similarly the table has four forces acting on its legs which are cancelled by the equal and opposite forces acting from the table, lets call them r.

Now according to Newtons Laws (since there is no motion) there should be an equal and opposite force to W. Where is it?

  • What is the ONE word for asking in which position something is placed (eg to get answer first/second )?

I need a word lie which/where/what/ or why

In many languages you have a word which asks for the position in a list. The only similar concept I can think of in English is HOWMANIETH..... What word can replace howmanieth in this sentence: "Howmanieth were you placed in class" OR "The howmanieth president of USA was Richard Nixon?"
