Why do people try to smuggle their children into group photographs?
Recently after a graduation ceremony, there was a photo to be taken of the class. However one of the graduates wanted his child (maybe 5 or six) standing next to him in our group photo. He had also tried to take the child to receive his award, but been thwarted at the stage by the organisers.
While I understand that their children are important to their parents, family photos were available separately.
Some tried to cancel their group photo order...
Why do these people insist to include their children in such photographs thereby spoiling the photo for others? What is the driving force behind this? I am trying to understand the situation so I can be prepared in future.

Because they want to share the moment with their kids.
Now, if you want another image without the kids, you could have just asked.

Selfishness.
You can as a group can ask the offending parent to have a shot with the child later. All you have to do is speak out. That person probably didn't see it as a problem (loose boundaries issues?). It just takes one to voice out and I'm sure a few others would follow.

Why didn't the rest of the graduating class complain before the picture was taken?
If you were the photographer, insist that it will be of grads only unless all the grads allow the child or all their children to be part of the picture. The organisers made their prohibition stick. So can you. You, as a business person, have a monetary stake in selling copies of that picture. Better to risk one unhappy sitter refusing to order and pay than a dozen.
Make it a choice. Either the child (or dog, cat, bird, or grandparent) stands off camera or the grad gives up their place in the photo.

its not about them being in the photo...its about keeping an eye on them at all times.

Well, that's what happens when right-wing populists somehow get into positions of political authority and stop the free movement of people across international borders. It's terrible when hard-working people have to resort to smuggling their kids. Outrageous!
