"Free Breakfast" vs "Breakfast Buffet" and Hampton Inn?

I reserved a hotel and on the amenities it said "Free Breakfast. My brother in law got the same hotel and room type and his amenity said "Free Breakfast Buffet". Is there a difference?

    Probably not.

Probably not. Here's what you can get:

"Waffles, oatmeal, cereal, omelet type eggs, bacon or sausage, bagels, yogurt, fruit, boiled eggs, pastries, coffee, tea, juice. over a year ago." [Trip Adviser]

Hotels and motels can offer a range of free breakfast menus. Some offer little more than pastries and juices, while others go all the way up, at the higher end, to cooked food made to order.

In general, even the lesser ones have no limit as to how much you can eat in their breakfast area.

Not in this case. All Hampton Inns offer a standard breakfast bufffet - it has hot breakfast foods (eggs, premade ometets, bacon, hash browns, sausage - some combination of these every day), breads and pastries, fruit, yogurt, etc. It's about the same at all Hampton hotels.

Some hotels DO offer packages where a more traditional table-service breakfast is provided. But that is not the case at Hampon Inns.

Same thing for this hotel. Calling it a buffet would be stretching it.

It will be a self help breakfast. Juices, breads, cereal, package oatmeal. perhaps a waffle and fruit.

You can call the front desk and ask

As someone who has worked at a Hampton inn I say skip it entirely. Free or not unless you just get cereal don’t do it. Trust me the products they use are disturbing.

There can be. Free Breakfast can mean a cup of coffee and a pastry or pop tart. A Breakfast Buffet suggests a greater selection.
