Half my ram seems missing?

Suddenly only 4gb of my 8gb of ram in my w7 64-bit laptop shows. I tried switching the modules or running them one at a time and never more than 4 gb shows- each module is 4gb and there are two. How can i get my computer to go back to 8gb of ram like when I first installed these modules?

Both sockets work. Both ram modules work. I've been all over youtube and see lots of folks with this same problem and nothing they suggest works. Is there a remedy?

Update 2:

Also, all my past restore points went away. I had to go into services.msc and adjust that before I could create a new system restore point. Is there any way to recover the old restore points?

Update 3:

Problem resolved after repeated plugging and unplugging ram modules.

Then, the final test would be both ram, then swap sockets with both. Between those tests, you should be able to figure out what is going on with the ram...
