What do you think of the idea of a Spanish side in Super Rugby?

A story, up again this year, of a Spanish side in Super Rugby This would see SA with six sides plus another in their own time zone. Though not brought up by SA they are happy to support it.

I wish I knew why anyone was inclined to believe that a Spanish side was the least bit viable. There is professional rugby in Spain, but it at a level well below even the Italian Top- Ten.

Japan would make a lot more sense -- albeit not for South Africa. But before they can even start thinking about that, they need to get the Argentinian franchise up and running.

With Georgia, Russia and Romania being more advanced than Spain, its hard to see why they would be included ahead of them. They would be slap bang in the middle of the SANZAR time zones, and would be easier to travel to as they're almost in the middle east rather than Europe.

Spain still has a long way to go, and its best team is usually the whipping team of the Amlin cup, which if you're only a S15 fan is Europes second tier competition, like the Europa league in football. To then put them up against the best Super rugby has to offer would just mean the only influence they'll have will be on the top teams overall points differences.

Strongly doubt this possibility. It's hard enough to believe that Super Rugby could last having teams in SA, AUS and NZ. I do agree with the idea of another team in SA. Though It would be hard, it would seem nice to see a team in Argentina. You have to remember how much of a toll 20 hour flights put on a team. There is also a possibility of another expansion team in the pacific. Japan already has a professional league but keeps coming up. Another intriguing city seems to be Honolulu, Hawaii.
