saddle pad question?

I have a nice thick Abetta air grip saddle pad. The underside is almost like a neoprene but it has all these tiny holes in it that they say help to keep your horse cool. The neoprene like material is so it doesn't slip. I did not choose this pad myself, it came with my saddle and matches it. While I love the thickness and the way it cushions the saddle I'm not crazy about the neoprene like material. I am finding it hard to understand how this material could keep a horse cooler. If I wore something made out of a rubbery material next to my skin I think it would make me feel hot and sweaty even if it did have small air holes all through it. I was thinking of getting some kind of a thin liner to go against my mare. What are your opinions on this? Also, what is the coolest material for a liner? Felt or cotton maybe? Thanks so much for your opinons.

The neoprene is no warmer than a nice thick fleece, and the air holes let it breathe more than a fleece does when it's smooshed down by the saddle and rider.

Try it out before you get a liner - just ride in it, and see how your horse does. It's not going to absorb the sweat like a cotton or fleece pad would, so you may see sweat dripping down his sides that you wouldn't with those pads, but compare how warm he is under this pad with how warm he gets under his old pad.

If you add a liner, you've thrown away the non-slip feature of this pad, and added one more thing that can 1. get a crease that will cause a sore; 2. affect the fit of the saddle by adding width; 3. need constant cleaning; 4. not be any cooler - remember, it's got the neoprene on top of it anyway, so if it doesn't breathe on its own, it's not going to breathe with a thin liner under it!

Human skin would feel differently under neoprene than fur would. The fur keeps it off the skin, so it doesn't chafe or feel funny.

Since the liner would be completely covered by the neoprene, it's not going to be any cooler.

Forget the liner, and just buy a new saddle pad if you don't like the neoprene. Also, neoprene is used for horse boots, including bell boots and splint boots.
