In all situations, I would feel upset towards the parents for going about something the wrong way when they surely know better and know the risks of getting caught. I would feel really sympathetic towards the kid, because the kid didn't do anything wrong. The kid still competed and won fairly on their part. Parents buy "made" horses for their kids all the time, and they should, especially if the kid is a beginner or needs confidence building. If the funds came from illegal sources, it's not the kid's fault. The kid's clearly a minor and did not have anything to do with the shady dealings, and this poor kid will probably get lots of negative attention, lose friends, and lose their horse for a situation they had no control over.

If I had lost in competition to this kid, I wouldn't really care. This kid and their horse still had a better performance than me and mine and this means we need to better our own performance. Regardless of where the money came from to buy this horse, someone had to train the horse and the kid. At one point, every horse was green. If I put the time and effort into my own horse, my own horse will someday be that "made" horse cleaning up the blue ribbons. It's poor sportsmanship to blame a loss on somebody else, no matter where the competitor's parents make their money.

I don't think you can really hold it against the child or the horse if they weren't aware of the scheme.

    A. If I were the child, I'd be embarrassed and ashamed of my parent, but it wouldn't change how I feel about the horse (because of course I would be a typical kid and love the horse more than life itself). I would feel I deserved to win because I was a good rider. I wouldn't have the objectivity to think about how the extra money could have made winning much easier.

    B. I'm sure there would be some resentment.

    Horse got seized?

    A. My world has crumbled and I hate my parents.

    B. I'd feel sorry for the kid.

A: I'd probably have a bond with it by now, and though I'd be pissed, I think I'd still appreciate winning competitions we had.

B: Obviously angry, but the way that the horse was bought does not determine the way the child rides. Unless it is a pleasure class based on the horse, rather than an eq class based on the rider.

A: Devastated and angry at my parents

B: Feel bad for the child, but possibly relieved that I wouldn't be competing and losing to the same girl. This is a toughie
