I was wondering how many bags of shavings you use in a month or how much straw for bedding. Thanks.?

This depends on the horse. Some horses keep neater stalls than others. And it depends on the amount of time your horse spends indoors. The less time your horse spends inside, the less bedding you will need. The size, layout and floor of the stall can also make a difference. Stalls with natural drainage, such as clay, and packed stone flooring will require less bedding. We have 12 x 12 stalls with packed stone and fitted rubber mats. The horses are on day-time turnout, weather permitting, because the farm is still relatively new and we don't have run-in sheds yet. Generally they are out for 10 - 12 hours per day for about 6 days per week. We use ABM pelleted bedding. I think the bags are 35lbs and we go through about 1 bag per week per horse. Two of our horses are particularly messy and might go through 2 or 3 bags in a week.

In winter I normally use 3 bags of shavings per week with my dirty mare, I've tried everything to cut down but nothing works as she box walks.

With less dirty horses I've managed on 1 bag per week.

When using straw I generally use the same amount, 3 bales (small rectangular) if dirty and 1 if cleaner.

Straw is much cheaper but isn't always suitable for horses with allergies etc.

I go through about 1 bag a week or sometime 4-5 a month

I don't stall my horses unless injured, snow storm, etc, when I do I use 3/4 of a bag between the 3 of them. I HATE straw. It's impossible to clean up, it's heavy. And my one boy eats it. Unless you have a mare ready to foal, I strongly suggest shavings

If this helps any, amongst 28 horses we use just under 2 tonnes of shavings (12"x7" dump trailer full) every two weeks. We give a decently generous amount per stall (12x12").

i usually put half a bag of shavings in a week, so its a bag every two weeks per horse for me,
