Religionists, does it worry you?

that atheists and non-religious people in general are intelligent, usually well-educated people?

All you have to back yourself up are your feelings and provably dodgy "holy" books while we use science, knowledge and scientifically proven things to back up our position.

Isn't there a small part of you that's thinking, "These people use science as their weapon. Surely they can't be wrong?"

Update:

I'm not saying religious people are stupid as I know quite a few who are way more intelligent and educated than myself. I'm not saying I'm that intelligent or educated either....

You cannot use science to back up religion. I've seen many try and all of those arguments can be shot full of holes or just fall flat on their backsides.

Wow! A religious person called me an idiot. I thought we were the rude ones...

Update 2:

@Abomination of Desolation:

"So, I am to believe that you feel those who are religious have done so by ignoring science? Or are you suggesting that they are incapable of it's use to formulate positions on topics?"

You can believe whatever you want. I didn't say that. The majority of Christians/muslims argue with nothing more than their holy books and their "personal relationship with God/Allah" as their "weapons".

Update 3:

There is no "dichotomy" to crumble so your ramblings are invalid.

Update 4:

@ Rayn

All I see is "blah blah blah" and you trying to look intelligent. I asked a simple question which could have 2 simple answers.

Update 5:

@Liam

"religion has spent almost nothing and they both has as much evidence as each other"

I won't even bother reading the rest of what you wrote. It's obvious from the extract of your tirade above that you have no idea what you're talking about.

Religious evidence: Holy books and "testimony". The fact that a flower is beautiful is NOT proof of creation. Your claim that god answers prayers is NOT proof.

Scientific evidence against religious arguments: Too much to put in here.

Update 6:

"Edit: So archaeology which verifies and validates much of the Bible is useless?"

Most of us non-believers agree that the Bible contains quite a bit of history. That does not mean it's the word of God. It was written by people who existed in a world that we know exists. Obviously the geography part of it can be backed up. Still not proof that it's the word of god.

Can you back up the creation of the universe? Can you back up the existence of god? With science? If you could we would not be having this debate.

Update 7:

@Yorkshire Lass.

All due respect to you ma'am, but I can provide evidence to you that the Bible is not about God, but about aliens pretending to be god. Does that mean that the Bible is about aliens pretending to be god? No. All it means it that depending on who is reading it, and whether your mind is open or not, you can take almost anything you want out of the Bible. The Bible could be the word of god. The bible could be a textbook about the ancient middle Eastern people. The bible could be a codebook. The bible could be about aliens. However, it CANNOT be proven to be any of the above.

    I'm not into scientism. Science can't tell us much about anything beyond the material world so why would I look to it for things it can never explain? And to say that there is nothing beyond the physical world is presumptuous. Just because somethings can't be seen with the physical senses doesn't mean they don't exist. Scientists and most people believe that atoms are part of reality and yet no one has ever seen them. We don't mock people who believe atoms exist and if we did, we'd be mocked and rightly so.

    Some atheists and many non religious people are intelligent but so are religious people. Christianity is full of intelligent people that totally changed the world for the better.

    Here's just a smidgen of their contributions -

    Christians founded Europe's and North America's great universities; The Sorbonne, Oxford, Harvard, Yale and Princeton are some of the many notable universities established to God's glory. In Europe, many universities sprang forth from medieval monasteries; in America, the earliest and most notable universities began as institutions for training pastors and missionaries.

    They've written extraordinary works of literature: The remarkable literature of Christians inspired by their faith ranges from Augustine's City of God and Eusebius' Ecclesiastical History to Dante's Comedy and John Milton's Paradise Lost to the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Flannery O'Conner and Aleksandr Solzhenitsy.

    They've engaged in / writing about philosophy and theology and the life of reason: Some of the leading representatives include Augustine, Anselm, Thomas Aquinas, Blaise Pascal, Soren Kierkegaard, and Johnathon Edwards. Today, organizations such as the Society of Christian Philosophers and the Evangelical Philosophical Society attest to this ongoing tradition.

    They've advocated human rights, democracy, political freedoms, concerns for the poor: These themes are rooted in bibical ideals that all humans are made in God's image, that they have dignity and worth, and that they are equal before the law.

    They've built hospitals and hospices: Unlike Greeks and Romans, early Christians were concerned about health care, looking after the sick and the dying. Once the Christian faith became official in the empire, this ministry expanded considerably. The Council of Nicea (AD 325) commissioned bishops to establish hospice care in every city where a church building existed. The first hospital existed throughout Europe. (Think too of Florence Nightingale, the founding of the Red Cross and so on.)

    "Religionists, does it worry you?

    that atheists and non-religious people in general are intelligent, usually well-educated people?"

    I don't think it's necessarily true, but why would it worry me if it was. As it stands, your claim is an unsupported assertion (ie a logical fallacy).

    "All you have to back yourself up are your feelings and provably dodgy "holy" books"

    Strawman misrepresentations, appeals to ridicule, innuendo and unsupported assertions - all logical fallacies.

    "we use science, knowledge and scientifically proven things to back up our position"

    Actually, legitimate science doesn't deal in absolutes like proof. We can never be sure that we've considered all the axioms, And we could be just one discovery away from undermining what we think we know. Put simply, we don't know what we don't know. Science deals in probability and confidence - not proof.

    "Isn't there a small part of you that's thinking, "These people use science as their weapon. Surely they can't be wrong?""

    No. Because;

    a) my faith isn't in any logical capacity, inconsistent with objective science (I am currently studying a science degree), and

    b) those actually educated in science understand that all science incorporates uncertainty. The scientific method makes no provision for any idea being beyond question.

    I'm an engineer and a physicist.

    Are you a scientist? What field? Are you a member of the scientific community?

    You act like a hurting, hateful person. Try speaking for yourself, and not the scientific community.

    There is a procedure, or a path to follow on the road of science.

    There is a procedure, or a path to follow on the road of spirituality.

    Follow the path, and decide for yourself. It is all up to you to accept or reject religion, it is your choice. You seem quite silly in this post.

    The question of God and spirituality is the most important question a human being has to face in this life. Humanity has been struggling with this question since man began. To not make this quest and to be able know enough to decide for yourself the answer to this question makes you fool.

    Spend at least two or three years on this path and make up your own mind. Put the question to rest in your own mind, then you will no longer have the urge to battle the "religionists" or defend us, the scientific community.

    Find peace brother, life is short.

    It is not a matter of intelligence, it is basically a matter of humility - that I have realized - when a person realizes that he is limited despite being highly gifted intellectually, then there is a chance for the heart to open to faith in the invisible realm - the spiritual realm. It is an open heart that discovers God - spirit to Spirit, not a clever mind. This is what Jesus meant when he said that we must become as little children to enter the Kingdom of God, this Kingdom resides within the opened-to-God heart. The work of the Spirit of Jesus is to do just this when we submit to him. We can assume the earth-born Jesus to be highly intelligent and self-taught.

    We may have to place all our 'much-learning' aside to enable the 'intellect' of the heart to begin to respond to the vibrations of the 'other' realm. Too much mental activity in learning can stifle the sensibilities of the heart.

    "Be still, and know that I am God."

    The above scripture Psalm 46:10, is one of the most profound statements of Truth in the Holy Bible Few have reached this quality of stillness.

  • Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law,

    That's a pretty interesting dichotomy you have created. So, I am to believe that you feel those who are religious have done so by ignoring science? Or are you suggesting that they are incapable of it's use to formulate positions on topics?

    Either way, it is pretty interesting how your dichotomy crumbles in reality where those of religious and non-religious persuasions are both equally capable of using scientific discovery to support a view point they hold.

    Edit:

    "You can believe whatever you want. I didn't say that. The majority of Christians/muslims argue with nothing more than their holy books and their "personal relationship with God/Allah" as their "weapons"."

    In the 2011-2012 school year:

    • 5,636 Catholic elementary and middle schools educated 1,440,572 students

    • 1,205 Catholic high schools educated 590,883 students

    • 233 Catholic Colleges and Universities educated 812,098 students

    And that was only in the United States. We do this all over the world and have done so for hundreds of years. http://www.usccb.org/about/media-relations/statist...

    If Atheists value knowledge and intelligence so much then how many Atheist schools taught how many students last year?

    With love in Christ.

    Intelligence has yet to be defined and education is subjective. You might call a well-educated person one who is fluent in the language of French, English and differential calculus while another might say that one who knows the stats and strategies of every football team or knows the history of development of every automobile is well-educated. One might call the other an Ivy League elitist and the other might call the one a sports or car geek. The value of what we know is a matter of what we do with it.

    Tl;dr Your premise is a baseless assumption rendering your point moot.

    shall we get some thing immediately. First there are in trouble-free words 2 Abrahamic religions.. Judaism and Christianity. that's real that Abraham replaced into the fleshly father of the Arabs Ishmael, notwithstanding the inheritor to the resources of God replaced into Isaac (Genesis 21:12). and then Isaac's son Jacob (Israel) (Genesis 28:13-14). Abraham isn't a non secular father to any keep the Jews and Christians. Abraham is the daddy to all those who believe in Jesus Christ now( Romans 4:11 ) or who will contained in the destiny (Romans 11:26). And yet another element... Jesus replaced into no longer in basic terms a favourite guy He replaced into God contained in the flesh (John a million:a million&14, Isaiah 9:6) , and is now sitting on God's suitable hand.(a million Peter 3:22) Now i did not quote one scripture , yet you are able to look them up in case you've a thoughts to. real Christians do no longer yell at homosexuals, neither do they validate gay sin nor the different sinfull habit. We call sin what that's, sin. and the wages of sin is death (oops.... sorry Romans 6:23) some persons do truthfully obey those regulations Now with that stated to respond to your question. convinced , yet those are literally not the in trouble-free words regulations ... there are various of yet the following is the base line .... draw close, that's the great commandment contained in the regulation? Jesus stated unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy thoughts. that's the first and tremendous commandment. And the second one is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On those 2 commandments carry each and each of the regulation and the prophets. Matthew 22:36-40 ( Oops sorry back , each now and again I in basic terms cant help myself) God bless , Love and peace , Captain Arlo
