Was Robin van Persie's move to Man Utd one of Arsene's greatest mistakes?

No transfer in world football has inspired so much debate in recent years as Robin van Persie's move to Manchester United last summer.

The forward was yet another player heavily criticised by many Arsenal fans for chasing the paper and a perceived lack of loyalty, despite him claiming the move was in the quest of trophies (via Goal.com).

Many Gunners fans also criticised the London club for selling one of the side's best players to their fierce Premier League rivals.

In a sub-plot, the transfer effectively doomed Manchester City's manager Roberto Mancini, who feuded with club officials for their inability to sign van Persie.

If Arsenal could wind back the clock, would they agree to the transfer again?

In the age of record breaking transfers I was shocked at the transfer price. Shrewd business on United's part but it was at the expense of Arsenal. The player should have gone for quite a bit more.

I am an Arsenal fan and i am severely dissapointed about Robin Van Persie. In no way in my worst nightmare I imagined that he'd go to the Manchester United. However I trust Wenger and i know he's going to change RVP with anybody as excellent as him.

RVP guaranteed Man United the EPL title.

Man United and Man City had tied on points but goal differential is what determined the league title.

Arsene should have brought in a world class defender and a strong midfielfan to support RVP in his quest for titles. They should have focused on winning a smaller cup like the Capital One Cup.

Arsenal lost to Bradford City an English League team so RVP knows Arsene so it was better to leave then stay with the Gunners and fight for 3rd and 4th place trophies.

Yes RVP was one of Arsene's greatest mistakes but Arsene caused it by not having a world class goal keeper and defender. RVP was lost before his last season at Arsenal because Arsene is no longer serious about winning titles.

    Arsenal had two choices...

Sell him to Man Utd for £24m... or

Keep an unhappy player for one more season and then he goes to Man Utd for free.

Neither were great choices but for the well being of the club surely £24m is better than £0m

In answer to your question if the clock wound back Arsenal would be in exactly the same position and would probably do the same thing again. The clock really needs to go back two years when RVP had two years on his contract. Then Arsenal would be in a position to do something.

It was a shrewd move by Wenger. The difference between first and fourth in the prem is a few mill at best. He got 24 for RVP and kept the fourth spot that he seems to love. And at the end of the day has money to buy Rooney with, assuring him a fourth place spot next season too.

My gunners are a walking joke. I love them but Arsene Wegner sucks and doesn't know what he's doing anymore. I have no hope for our future =(

He still is there hero by heart no matter where he may be now. If it wasn't for Arsenal he wouldn't be who he is today!
