22 days in Beijing for an Australian tourist?
I'll be in Beijing as a tourist at the beginning of May this year. For the first 4 nights I have booked a hotel just near the Forbidden City. That leaves me 18 days & nights. I'll need to go to the Great Wall of course, but is that just a day trip? What are the sights I should see, night markets to visit, daytime spectaculars etc or more rural out of Beijing places to stay that I should try and do. Do you have any special places that you would recommend staying in Beijing. All tips & advice will be gratefully received. Thanks

Like others have said, 22 days is a long time to be in one city. I have traveled to China once before for about the same time. I stayed in Beijing for 8 days and became quite bored after the first 4. So I would suggest that if it's possible for you, to visit other cities. Places like Xi'an for example would be a great contrast as it is more of a historical city and less of a booming metropolis like Beijing
An AMAZING place in beijing for tourists is the silk market. Its a multi-level shopping market absolutely flooded with amazing buys. They sell everything from clothings, luggage, to electronics and jewelery. Its an easy way to kill a day or two as you haggle prices with the sales ladies and uncover more and more treasures (Great place to get souvenirs)
Wang Fu Jing is also a fun place-its basically just a boulevard but it is very famous and has lots of big department stores as well as back alleys filled with specialty shops, boutiques, and little outdoor shops.
Wherever you go in Beijing, I simply suggest that you become familiar with the subway system. Traffic in Beijing is absolutely horrible (comparable to NYC). The subway system is 2 yuan and the 10+ lines can take you anywhere in the main city.
Happy travels!

Do you have 22 full days? That's really long. Why not explore other cities in China.
The Great Wall takes about half day. Don't miss Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, 798 art factory, Olympic Park, Donghuamen night market, silk market.
Also take a train tour to see the Terracotta Warriors and Horses in Xian! An itinerary for reference: http://www.chinaholidays.com/tours/beijing-weekend...
For a 2 days trip, you can visit the Summer Resort in Chengde, and see the more original section of Great Wall - the Jinshanling Greal Wall.

22 days in Beijing is quite long. I think you need to find something interesting to do and visit more attractions, even go to other cities of China. As it is the capital of China, you need to know more about the beijing facts. Below is a link about Beijing covering many aspect of the city, such as overvie, nighlife, restaurants, hotels, attractions and tours, etc. Click it to see more.

Tiannanmen Square is across the street from the forbidden city. You may want to visit Quianmen st. south of Tiannanmen Square. It is south of Tiannanmen(Forbidden City is north of Tiannanmen Square). In this place thay have a lot of shops and it is beautifully decorated. Enjoy!!!
