Car AC Conversion - R-12 recovery help needed?

I'm converting my car's AC from R-12 to R-134a but cannot find anyone that can evacuate the R-12 from the system here in Colorado. Any ideas? Ideally they need to be near Denver.

Update:

The car is a 1993 Subaru Legacy with a bad compressor.

I know the steps necessary to do the conversion and have a used R-12 compressor that I have completely drained and ran brake cleaner through to remove the mineral oil. I know what to DO I just can't get the R-12 out to get started.

So does anyone know where I can go to have the R-12 evacuated? I have called several shops and looked online and cannot find anyone that can do it.

Update 2:

Michael - even if I go with R-12 again I need to replace the compressor which requires evacuation of the R-12...

If you have not found a place to recover the r12 it is unlikely it will ever be reclaimed or even reused for that matter, So I just say put your wrench on that fitting and get back on here and ask what all of that hissing sound was when you were trying to replace the heater hose with the fitting on it.

You could take it to the scarp yard or let it set for 50 years and the result would be the same, Although in these instances you would not to be blamed for depleting the ozone layer and rest easily at night.

As for the conversion, moisture and compressor contamination are the things that will cause a repeat failure (not r12 mineral oil vs 134 pag oil), I have converted many r12 systems that people repeatedly charged because they were leaking and wound up depleting the systems oil causing the compressor to eventually fail.

When a compressor fails it blows all kinds of debris into the plumbing, Normally there is a filter drier that traps it, Although before it gets there it has to go through the condenser which is hard to get cleaned out so, The system needs to be flushed out from the compressor outlet to the filter as best you can, The filter needs to be examined for blow out as well, Because if the filter blew out, You obviously have more cleaning to do.

R12 and 134a Have nearly the same operating pressures and refrigerant characteristics.

I recommend not converting if you can avoid it. The cost of a minimal decent conversion is 2-3 times the cost of a recharge with R12. I had a Volvo converted and with compressor replacement (compressor failure is what led me to do it) it cost $1200. Cheap conversions often kill the compressor within a couple of years. It would be worth a trip to New Mexico or Arizona to get a recharge.

There are probably shops that will service the R12 system but not knowing what car, or what you want to accomplish, it's hard to answer. The R12 system was designed for R12 and to convert to R134a properly takes a lot more than people believe.

I'm sure there is a shop to check your system but if you still have the R12 in the system and it's blowing cold, why bother.

After restoration of R-12, upload 8 0zs of p.a.g. oil get unfashionable kit from vehicle save and approximately 4 cans of 134-A, Seeing R-12 structures use greater fron to fill you will discover you'll want much less w/134-R. Engine off load 134-R into device till finally it won't take to any extent further, initiate eng. positioned a/c on intense n fill till finally low side is at around 30 - 35 p.s.i, on low side and 250 p.s..i.s on intense side, "humidity would variy readings" I even have executed this manny of situations in previous saving friends hundredes of $ funds.
