Why does swimming laps make me more emotional than other workouts?

Whenever I swim laps, I feel like I'm conquering all my psychological fears... does that have something to do with being underwater?

Thanks for any ideas.

Update:

I think all are correct so far.

@Vera - I had tubes in my ears as a child and was unable to get into the water (so was conditioned to stay away by my parents), so you may be onto something there.

Perhaps in your childhood you had a fear of water or an incident happened in your early childhood that has something to do with water and it is a not very pleasant memory or a suppressed memory that you blocked from your mind.. but subconsciouly know that something about water made you fearful in the past but you may not be aware what it was.. so to be able to swim laps, makes you feel as if you conquered a fear.. and quite probably you have.. if you had a fear of water before and had a problem to go to the pool and swim and trust yourself to swim and take slow even deep breath then you may have overcome this anxiety that held you back in the past...I guess you had an unpleasant connection in one way or another that had to do with water which was blocked from your mind.. you knew you had a psychological fear and you may still not know the reason for this fear but the most important thing is that now you conquered your fear and the water is no longer your enemy.. you may learn to really enjoy swimming and take it up as a serious hobby.. Swimming is a great sport and it exercises all muscles without having to sweat.

In the future you will remain calm and anything to do with water is something you managed to handle and get control over your fears..

It's a full body work out and your body will respond accordingly, mentally and physically.
