Australian parents, what is your opinion of this?

http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Finmem...

Do you think that the Department of Community Services should have the right to take custody of children for the purpose of forcing them to have medical treatments that are ineffective and dangerous? Neither the child in this case, or her parents, wanted her to have the chemo, her condition was clearly terminal and all that DoCs did was make the end of her life a torturous hell. What is your opinion on the subject and what should we, as Aussie parents, be doing to make sure this doesnt happen to us or our children?

Update:

There were two doctors involved in having the child taken for medical treatment, and literally dozens who stated quite clearly that chemo would NOT help. In NSW in the 2008-2009 period more than 6000 were taken from their parents in order for medical treatments to be carried out against the parents, and childrens, wishes. While there may be rules in place, they are NOT being followed.

The link has certainly made me want to get the book to find out all about it. Personally, I don't have a very good opinion of DoCS at the best of times thanks to all the devestating news stories we hear but if I'm getting this picture straight, and I'm pretty sure I am, then I think it is absolutely appalling, not only on behalf of DoCS but the doctors and hospital as well.

As to what we can do, I really wish I knew. I don't know how effective letter writing is but contacting anyone and everyone from local MPs to State and Federal Governments voicing disdain for these sorts of 'systems' and procedures.

While as the story stands I think its incomprehensible of any Govt body to intervene in this way & I feel whole heartedly for the poor girl & her family.

I know that for Docs to be able to enforce ANY medical treatment it must be supported by not only the treating Doctors but supported by an independent specialist of the same field.

I wonder how much of the full story is out. This tends to make me think the child's 'best intrests' were being considered it was just the total incompetence of a system thats been proven tragically and often fatally slow has stuffed up the whole situation making an unbearable situation even more intolerable for all concerned.

Irrespective of how it happened heads should undoubtedly roll & PLEASE let the 'system ' learn from this so that no other child or family should endure the same. Unfortunately with Docs that is historically not the way thing eventuate & never in an expedient fashion.

Personalyy I would be arrested for malicous damage were it nessicary to prevent a treatment on my child that I had not approved court order or not. I would also n I would say 99.9% trust the advise of my treating Dr & opt in for a treatment rather than out IF the team felt there was a chance,

DoCs DONT have to PROVE neglect, just the (subjective) 'risj" of neglect is enought to qualify their reporting

every family that I am aware has had dealing with them has ALWAYS eanded up WORSE off...

DoCs are agenda driven and have quotas to fill...... and would NEVER let the TRUTH get in the way of a good story

I am SAD this family had to go through this..... but they arent the only ones who have been screwed over by a System designed only to protect ITSELF.

I read this in the newspaper last week and I was extremely saddened. I'm sad that her parents didn't get to spend much time with her before her death and I sad because she had to suffer so much. I don't know what the answer is but there was a failure somewhere. No one would wish this on any family. My heart goes out to this family.
