Is there a health risk with machines when working out?

I work out during the week after classes, and at the gym I go to they have machines and dumbbells. A friend of mine tells me that using the machines actually can cause some kind of medical issue with your growth plates (or something like that) because they allow you to lift more than you normally could, and then the muscle, although the muscle heals, doesn't heal as properly as it should have. Thus, somehow causing your growth to be tampered. Now, I couldn't find anything on google about this, so I hope someone here can answer this.

Simply, can you cause some kind of harm similar to what I described, besides the obvious "If you push to hard, you can hurt yourself"?

if you break a bone at the end (very hard to do) you can slightly mess up your growth.. no big deal you'd honestly have to have a car dropped on you to do anything serious.

as for machines hurting you? yes i heard using machines for shoulders can mess up that joint so you should stick to free weights for shoulders.

Keep good form and you should be fine. That's how people get hurt is when they don't have good form and swing (go out of form).
