What is with people calling Staffies 'English' Staffies?

I swear they never used to be called English Staffordshire Bull Terrier- it was always Staffordshire Bull Terrier!

Over the past year I have started seeing EVERYBODY calling them 'English'

Staffordshire is in England- these are the original breed- the name should not change! It was always Staffordshire Bull Terrier before- why are people calling them English now? Its driving me crazy. Sure, there are Amstaffs now- and they ARE a different breed- but there aren't English Cocker Spaniels and American Cocker Spaniels- its just Cocker Spaniels and American Cocker Spaniels.

Staffordshire Bull Terriers were originally bred in England for bull baiting. APBT do have some Staffordshire Bull Terriers in the breeding not the other way around. Staffordshire Terrier (seperate breed from above) was the name given to the APBT by the AKC when they accepted the breed because they wanted to avoid the link to the dogs fighting past associated with APBT. The word American was added to the front later to avoid confusion with the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The American Stafordshire Terrier and the APBT diverged from there with the AmStaff becoming the show/confirmation lines, but you will often still see dogs dual registerd as AmStaffs with the AKC and APBT with the UKC. However people who aren't familar with the breeds generally lump them all into the "pit bull" catagory along with many other breeds.

First of all thanks for your input on my question. I think that the reason people do this is that its another way to separate them from Pit bull terriers. i know that in my area people were passing pits as staffies to get around laws even our local humane society does it. When I went apartment shopping I found that many refer-ed to staffordshires as an alias for pit bull. Pits are getting more and more aliases from staffie names to American Bully which are all very different breeds. I used to get really upset about it too now i just laugh.
