1990 Honda Accord turns over and starts for less than a second, then dies?

I have a 1990 Honda Accord EX Manual. The car turns over and starts but then dies within a second. I replaced the cap, rotor, wires and plugs with limited success. I was actually able to get it started and it idles for 5 minutes and ran up the street for about 100 yards, then it died again and would not start. I'm thinking it's a fuel issue but do fuel pumps work "sometimes"? Any other ideas? I'm too cheap to pay a mechanic...

This is a classic symptom of a bad Main Relay (fuel pump relay). Try this: the instant the engine is starting to die, use your left hand to whack the top of the dash board above the left air vent. This is where the Main Relay is located. Betcha the engine starts back up.

It's a fuel issue. An automobile engine needs two things to work....fuel and fire.Gas and a Hot Spark. The most overlooked(sometimes hard to get to)is the fuel filter. The fuel pump will either work or it won't.If the Fuel filter has never been out,you should replace it anyway before you throw any more money under the hood. The fuel pump is in the gas tank which requires you to drain and drop the tank.Start with the basics and keep up on the simple stuff.Your car will start for you every time.A WIX Fuel filter at the site below is $13.47 this item should be replaced every 50,000 miles.Good Luck

What I would say to you is that have you done a fuel pump test on the feul pump?.It could be shorting out after it warms up or is in its failing mode. The feul pump on those is either in the tank or mounted up underneath the car by the fuel tank.I am not sure what the fuel pump pressure is on those but you can call a parts store or a dealership and or a shop that has done those and they would have the information you need.hgm20002000@yahoo.com

Could be fuel pump because it sounds like it is struggling under a load but there could also be a blockage in your exhaust somewhere. If that is the case the engine could idle fine but die when the exhaust cant make it out the back and backs up to the combustion chamber and kills the oxygen in the chamber.

you need a ignition switch, try holding key just off of start position after it starts you will find that it will stay running if you hold the key.honda tech 12yrs. its not the fuel pump or f/i main relay dont waste your money on them

try holding the gas pedal as you start and see if its easier, if so then replace fuel filter, if its still there then replace fuel pump
