In Magic: The Gathering, trample?

I know a lot about the game, and I know what trample does, but lately I've been reading up on some abilities and something has confused me about what I know trample to do.

It says that you have to assign at least enough damage to kill a creature blocking before you can choose to do damage to your opponent. Would my opponent's creature be able to live if he buffed it up after I assigned the combat damage, assuming that I did the least amount of damage I had to?

I've always known trample as, if there is excess damage, you take that much, and if you buff him up after you've chosen to block, you'll just take less excess damage

When Combat damage is assigned, nothing can happen to buff it up from being destroyed, besides Regenerating it. Giant Growthing it during the damage step is a waste, because the damage isn't on the stack anymore (according to new rules this coming release of M10).

During the old rules, if you dealt damage to a creature that will be destroyed during damage step, but your opponent buff's it, it will either stay alive, or still die, depending on its toughness, and if multiple blockers to a single attacker were declared.
