How to install window air conditioner in a casement window?

We have a regular (horizontal) window air conditioner that we bought last summer for a casement window. Last summer, we got it properly supported from the bottom with two of these:

Then we tried to fill the "hole" in between the top of the air conditioner and the top of the window. The hole is around 22 to 24" square. We got a piece of plexiglass cut exactly to that, and then tried to use foam weather stripping to secure the plexiglass. This worked until the wind would blow, and the plexiglass would bend slightly at the middle, letting insects and hot air in.

We took the a/c down to the basement this winter and we're ready to try and install it again for this summer. Does anyone have any better suggestions as far as keeping the insects out?

Two things you should know:

1) It doesn't have to be attractive--it's just a window that faces our backyard.

2) It cannot be permanent. It's a rental duplex.

Suggest to use painted 3/4 inch plywood rather then the plexiglass, then you should be able to screw or nail in solid.

Since it's just seasonal/temporary, why not use tape to hold in place.
