I Am Having Humidity Issues For My Iguana!?

I recently got new thermometers for my animals (electric) and I noticed that my iguanas humidity was low. So I misted him more often and guess what? I can't get it to stay high (in the 70-80 is what it should be) it keeps dropping to 28-41%. I mist the cage and like, twenty minutes later the humidity drops back to the 40s. How do I hold the humidity?

I've tried giving him a larger water dish, it keeps the humidity in the 40s now. When I mist it goes into the 70s then drops back down.

He's in a 55gallon fish tank with a screen top (that doesn't fit). He's still a baby only a year old and exactly 2ft from nose to tail (I measured him today). And otherwise this he is healthy.

What could happen to him if the humidity stays low (I haven't noticed anything yet but I'm worried that something will happen)? And how can I keep it high?

An iguana a year of age should not be living in a 55gallon tank.

Young iguana (8-10 months of age) should not live in anything smaller the a 55 gallon tank. Smaller the tank you can not process the correct temps threw out. Enclosure needs to be at least 1.5-2 times it's total length ... an adult you will need a space of 6-7ft tall x 8-10ft long x 4ft wide.

Do you have your house heat on? This will drop the humidity down some. Humidity in a fish tank is never really that great to begin w/. If you were using the stick on glass type for reading humidity before, they read incorrectly to begin w/, your humidity was probably about where it is now before, but the stick on glass type was telling you different. You can never go w/ after spraying you need to wait, because well you just sprayed meaning that you haven't given the water time to remove itself from the probe, so your readings right after spraying of course will be wonderful. Nothing will happen if the humidity is low, he still is getting some. My girl in her big house during winter time, I'm lucky if it get 30%, summer time its in the 80% or higher. You may want to try and pipe in humidity from a humidifer or vaporizer. You can use many house hold items to do this, soda pop bottles w/ some type of hose, dryer vents. You can run the humidifer or vaporizer 24hrs a day or put on a timer where it runs for 30mins off for 30mins, repeat. My girl at a year of age, 29inches STL.

Before going for the fogger (they can over-humidify), try covering part of the lid. As long as you have air getting in, things should be fine. Try covering the half of the tank where his water dish is, this will trap in some of the added humidity from the larger water bowl...
