If a creature with trample is blocked by more than one creature in Magic: The Gathering...?

does any trample damage go through?

Here is an example:

Brontotherium (a 5/3 with trample) + Might of Oaks (making him a 12/10) is blocked by 2 creatures, lets say a 4/4 and a 3/2.

Now I know I can divide the damage however I want, but if I:

a) do all 12 to one of them, does the trample damage go through?

or

b) do 5 to the 3/2 and 7 to the 4/4, does the excess from both go through (essentially 3+3 = 6 damage to the player)?

Please answer both (a) and (b)

Answer A: No. If you assign all 12 to one creature, you have elected not to do trample damage at all and just do 12 damage to that creature.

Answer B: No. Once again you have elected not to do trample damage at all. You have just done 5 damage to one blocker and 7 damage to the other.

The important thing to remember with Trample is to assign lethal damage to the blockers, then whatever remains you assign to the player. In the above instance, you would assign 4 damage to the 4/4, 2 damage to the 3/2, and the remaining 6 damage to the player.

    A. No, it doesn't. This has to do with the exact nature of Trample, which is this: "This creature, after dealing lethal damage to all blockers, may choose to assign remaining damage to the defending player.

If you dealt all 12 to one creature, there would still be a non-lethal damaged creature blocking, and it would prevent Trample from doing anything.

    B. Well, what you actually would do is assign 2 to the 3/2 and 4 to the 4/4, then assign the remaining damage (6) to the player. Trample is damage assigned directly to the opposing player, not damage assigned to the blocking creature that gets redirected to the player.

If you assigned the damage like you say, no trample would happen. You would just overkill the two blockers.

    a) If you put all twelve on one of them all of the damage will go through.

    e.g. 12 to 3/2 damage: 9. 12 to the 4/4 damage: 8.

    b) If you have two creatures blocking one creature then the excess of both will go through.
