Timing Belt is making a whining / squealing noise?

My 1990 Honda Civic is making a whining / squealing noise from the timing belt. I pulled the cover off thinking it might be rubbing against it but that was not the problem.

Anyone know what would cause the timing belt to do this? I have not had it long and it was doing this when I bought it so I don't know if it has been replaced. A shop wants $50 to check it out.

Update:

If it is the tensioner what will that cost to fix?

That sounds like the bearings on the belt tensioner is failing. It may be the timing or the fan belts. I would remove the fan belts, start the car to see if the noise is there then shut it off. Don't run it more than 5 seconds. If it is still there then it is timing belt tensioner.

I can tell you almost positively that it is not your timing belt. If your timing belt was slipping or moving, which it would have to do to sqeal, and it has like grooves in it, your car would not start. It can jump on groove and not start and definately not run. Sounds like a tension pully. If that is what it is you are not looking at much money at all. You can probably do it yourself if you do that type of stuff. But if not I would never let anyone charge more that 50 in labor and then the part will cost of course. Chances are you know someone that can do it anyways. Good luck.

As a mechanic I just love laymen trying to explain the thuds, clunks, clanks, whines, squeals and bumps in the night to describe machine maladies. If it makes you feel better women are much more descriptive than men. I once had a lady tell me her car sounded like cats fecking when she started her car and then she said her car smelled like a cat had pissed on a hot radiator when she drove it. Sure enough, when I opened the hood there was a dead cat caught in the belts. My ex would just tell me her car was being wonkey (she was Brit). @ Witchy - I think the thingy your thinking of might be a CV joint, tie rod, idler arm, ball joint or king pin (or as the Brits say, "a grunion pin") RScott

If it's the timing belt, $50 bucks is well worth getting it checked out. If it breaks it will cost you way more, maybe even as much as rebuilding your engine, and at least a valve job.

Are you sure it's not just the serpentine belt?

  • that tension-er is the first thing that i would replace along with the belt it self, just to make it not such a waste of time, unless you have done that belt in the last 55000-60000 miles. i have that same car. it is not that hard to do. i do not have a price for that tension er though.
