How can bullies hurt me without using violence?

I keep hearing that bullying can be more than just physical violence. Does this mean just name-calling? I think that trivialises bullying because getting called names is nothing compared to being punched and kicked by real bullies. Can bullies really hurt me without using force?

Any bully worth his salt has to use a bit of biffo. As if I'm going to let my victims choose whether they want to get a shiner or be called a fairy. They'll get both, but the black eye is a must.

The only way to hurt a victim without hitting him is to use the threat of violence. It's very effective. You can actually humiliate a guy by making him introduce himself to people as "Fairy" but he must be afraid of you first.

Verbal bullying is less damaging than physical bullying but it can greatly effect some people. Some kids are tough enough to ignore it, some aren't but no one should have to endure either kind.

EDIT: Verbal Bullying and Cyber Bullying can only hurt you if you let them. Most people don't Physically Bully anyone anymore. It's done via chat rooms, IM's, email, hurtful words, rumors, etc. I wouldn't say they are equal in how much they hurt someone but shrinks say they can be.

Name calling can be hurtful, if they do it strategically, or if they are based on your weaknesses. Bullies can also spread lies, yell at people for no reason, ostracize you, talk down to you, etc.

In general, in children male bullies use violence, while female bullies use other tactics. While I'm sure it hurts to be beat up, it hurts just as much (if not more) to think that all of your classmates think you are a piece of s***.

bullies can hurt you physical and verbal. Bullies can name call you. And say some really harsh things to you. that will just never leave your mind. So yes physical and mental bullying is the same. it should all just stop

Yeahh, In my entire life, I've never met a physical bully. I believe that era is long gone. Nowadays, most "bullies" are through words.

Yes. They can call you names. These names can stick with you forever.

They can make you feel small and worthless, like a piece of sh*t.

They can make you so depressed, you wanna get swallowed up by the ground or lock yourself in your room, forever.

Getting punched and kicked, gives you bruises nothing more, you get over it.

So, yes, calling names can be just as bad as getting bashed.

    Of course.

If some kid walked up to you, punched you in the stomach, and walked off, yeah, it'd hurt, but imagine if he walked up to you, and humiliated you, threatened to hurt you and your family, called you names, wouldn't that have a worse emotional impact?
