How do I play an mkv movie and listen to all 6 channels of audio on 2 speakers?

I'm trying to watch an mkv movie on my computer, but I think some of the audio is being ignored. Most noticeably, the music is very faint or impossible to hear, while the voiceover is very loud. I assume this is because some of the channels are not being played.

I'm just looking for a way to tell the computer to play all tracks in stereo, does anyone know the best way to do that? I'm using vlc media player at the moment but I am willing to get another if it will solve the problem.

The audio is apparently: ND HE-AAC 6ch

Thanks in advance...
