Do sheep sleep? When and how?

I recently went bush camping for a couple of days and we were near a paddock that had a mob of sheep in it. During the night I often heard the sheep moving through the paddock and wondered if they ever sleep.

I assumed they sleep but am curious as to when they slept and how long and if they slept standing up or laying down as I never saw any sheep not on their feet.

Sheep sleep, but since they are a prey species (the kind that other animals like to eat) they sleep very lightly and in short naps rather than all at one time. Some sheep act as sentries while the other sheep sleep. Horses do the same things, they take 'cat naps' (pardon the pun), throughout the day. Sheep sleep standing up and lying down, it all depends on how safe they feel in their herd area. I am sure that sheep probably sleep more during the day than at night, when predators are more likely to be hanging about. If you see a sheep with a droopy neck and head, then it's asleep.

Sleep Sheep on the Go, is a smaller version, only 8 inches tall. Also, it has a 'gentle stream' soundtrack instead of the 'mother's heartbeat' on the big sheep. My husband bought the travel sleep sheep for my daughter (now 2months) and she loves it. We played it every nap time, changing tracks occasionally. Now you can see that the moment the sounds start she begins to get sleepy. She seems to like the whale song the best. It's also great for you to get back to sleep if you tend to wake up completely at night after feeding baby.
