Will I need to move our pregnant goldfish from the pond?

We have five goldfish in a small pond and one of them is quite obviously expecting. Will the eggs be safe if we allow her to stay in the pond?

Fertilization of goldfish eggs takes place externally. She needs to be where a male will have access to her, both to help induce her to spawn (by chasing her around the pond) and to actually fertilize the eggs once she throws them.

I have had success before by providing a lot of removable spawning surfaces like the roots of floating plants (water lettuce and water hyacinth are both good), spawing ropes, and even clean (never used) string mop heads. The eggs are very sticky and stick to these things - you can then remove them to a fish tank or other pond (I like kids' wading pools!) until the eggs hatch.

Unfortunately, one of a goldfish's favorite treats is it's own eggs, and they will pick your spawning material clean in less than 24 hours if you leave it where the adult fish have access to it. It is possible that a small percentage of the eggs may hatch, but only a fraction, and then the adult fish will eat any baby that will fit into their mouths.

So, your chances of ever seeing one of your spawn make it to adulthood is very, very small if you leave the momma fish with her eggs. But, if you take her out now, your eggs will never be fertilized and then for sure you'll never see fry from her!

Hope this helps - good luck!

If you remove the female then there will be no way the eggs will get fertilized. You will need at least the female and a male, maybe two males. How large are your goldfish and how large a tank do you have to put them in? Your best bet is to provide them lots of plants for the eggs/fry. As long as the fry have plenty of hiding places you will have a few survive.

Well i suggest you remove your goldfish and place her in a tank until she give birth (just to be safe), then just place her back into the pond when shes done giving birth (but leave the babies in the tank). If your fish give birth in the pond then there is a good chance that most of her babies will die.

I extremely have heard that too, yet mine on an identical time as the water froze each of ways precise all the way down to the backside of the pond. i understand to grant them indoors to a fish tank for the wintry climate. I extremely have had them stay in straightforward terms super all wintry climate if I placed a inventory tank heater ( farm shops carry them for below 25 money interior the water. they do now no longer consume lots, in certainty i do in no way feed my fish on an identical time as they are exterior. they could get alot to consume in spite of the undeniable fact that, because of the reality they enhance lots swifter than those I keep in a bowl with advertisement food. those exterior get insect larva and such from the water.
