Anyone got advice to an Absolute Beginner to Linux?

My Ex has left me with a computer that's useless to me unless I can work out how to program it. I'm more use to DOS. (yeah I"m a dinosaur)

As it is I can't write or read anything from the floppy, download my camera or use the CD burner (& don't get me started on the printer). Determined to get as much use as I can from this contraption.

There is another good lot of Linux forums at http://www.linuxforums.org/ - there are tutorials and help there, as well as being a place you can ask Linux bods all kinds of questions. In your case I'd recommend getting into the shell side of things - if you're a DOS person then you should be into it - it's like DOS but it actually has the power to do useful stuff!

Most computers allow to double boot OS. If you have a copy of Windows and know how to use it, install it. Then you'll have the option to run from Linux or Windows. Even if your CD drive doesn't seem to be working, if you do a cold boot it should boot to the Windows CD. If not.... then listen to the other guy with the basic Linux tips.

The best place to look for help and ask questions are the forums, this one is really good

You'll need to specify which variant of Linux you're running when asking questions though.
