Someone paid for gas with my debit card number?

Someone bought about $100 worth of gas when my card was with me at home. I'm scared now to use it to buy anything, whether in store or online. The bank fraud department said that the thief has used the magnetic stripe and not a chip with pin to steal gas. I never give my card to anyone. How could this have happened?

It happened to me here in the UK. It happens to lots of people. Scared Why ??  it does not happen every day and no doubt your bank refunded you, mine did.

There are skimmers which read your card when you use it.  It's a risk you take when you use plastic.  Credit cards generally protect you more.
