Why didn't the 60s band "Canned Heat" use Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson as primary lead singer?

Their only two big hits, "On the Road Again" and "Going Up the Country" were songs sung by Wilson.  All the ones sung by their main singer, Bob Hite are forgettable by-the-number Blues Rock that you will never hear on the radio today.  Alan Wilson's strange falsetto voice made those two songs memorable.  Why didn't they see that his voice was the main thing they had going for them and make him the primary singer?
