Marx classified people into 2 groups.  The proletariat--which is the normal worker and the bourgeoisie--which is the business owner.  His conceptualization was that the tension between the two in a Capitalist society would lead to an overthrow of the bourgeoisie by the proletariat and create a socialist society whereby the proletariat took over control of commerce.

His ideas appeal to a certain kind of thinking and subsequent rulers have tried to implement his theories at great cost to humanity.  Innocent deaths, mass suffering as a result of a lack of commodities, and the Cold War.  To that end, I would have say that his ideas were not useful to society--quite the opposite.
