How do I get rid of mothball odor emitting from new refrigerator and freezer?

Its ruining all of the food. I'm wondering if it is the cause of my joints locking up.

How can it ruin your food? You don't use containers or freezer bags?

You should have washed it before putting food in.

That's the plastics from the interior that are offgassing.  It's sort of like but not really the same as mothball naphthalene or p-dichlorobenzene odor.  A suboptimal plastics batch can be the problem.  You can try the baking soda and vinegar approach but it will be fairly futile.  Ask the store for a replacement.  If they won't, then empty it, turn it off, and leave the doors wide open for a few weeks, preferably in a hot garage or patio until the odor dissipates.

Empty the fridge out, clean it with small amounts of baking soda and vinegar applied to a sponge.  Once that is done, open a box of baking soda and let it sit in your fridge - replace it with a new box about every 6 months.
