Most places are supposed to ID anyone who appears to be under 40. In certain places (heavily trafficked tourist areas, for example), restaurants/shops have a blanket policy of checking the ID of everyone.

Because wait staff and bartenders can lose their jobs, and restaurant owners could lose their liquor licenses, which is pretty much a death sentence for a place.

It gets worse. Although I was served alcohol at 16, I was in my 30s the last time I got carded.

You seem immature.

Because you're 22 and obviously look it...? And many MANY places are required BY LAW to check ID, no matter how old the person may look or be. I'm 37 and still get carded from time to time. So what? Why are you making a big deal out of whipping out your ID? Is it that much of an inconvenience for you? Must be nice to be so pissed off about something to trivial.

Perhaps you look young for your age, in which case the assistant is right to check on you. Shop assistants can get into serious trouble if they make underage sales, so, if in doubt they must always check.
