How do I record guitar/bass on my Focusrite Scarlett?

I can record through the mic no problem, but nothing is happening when I try to play instruments. Doesn't seem to register at all. Also, it only seems to record on the left channel, nothing at all on the right. I know this may seem like a totally stupid question, but I'm brand new to all of this.

Update:

Can disregard the left channel bit

Make sure you switch the input mode to instrument, on the focusrite.

If it's trying to record stereo, you are presumably using a program which does not properly "understand" audio interfaces.

A Focusrite Scarlett should appear as multiple inputs and outputs.

Try Tracktion (Tracktion Waveform) as a proper recording system; there is a totally free and unrestricted version of that and it's better than many DAWs that cost ludicrous amounts.

There are lots of tutorials on youtube, if you have any problems working out how to use it.

You are getting audio only on the left channel

because the input jack is wired for stereo.

Get a cable with a mono (2 contact) jack on one end

and a stereo (3 contact) plug on the other.

That will feed your single signal to both inputs.

Why it doesn't work with instruments, I can't quite guess.
