Not with severe autism. They won't know what to do if they are too close to a car. They will not understand perception on what other people could do to them and they cannot stand for themselves. They'll end up getting hurt. They also get easily distracted. If it is in the mild form of autism like my brother's case then yes they can drive like any other normal person as long as they know what they are doing. For Down's people they can drive too.

I have MILD Autism, and I've been driving for over 30 years.  I also own and maintain my own car, work full time, pay taxes, vote, live independently, and pretty much lead a "normal" life by most standards. So the answer to your question is YES, people with Autism CAN learn to drive, and drive safely. It really depends on the person and how severe the disability they have is. The same is true for Down Syndrome.

It would depend on the degree of severity. There are some on the spectrum and some people with down syndrome that can drive.
