Could anyone in layman's terms say why, if there's global warming, why for most of 2021 it has been so perishing cold here, where it normally?

normally is not, in the Midlands, that everyone is going around in a hat and gloves

Use the phrase climate change - not global warming.  The severity of weather is increasing.  Extreme cold, extreme heat, drought and floods occurring more severely in places not accustomed to extremes.  Donald Trump, observing snow, smirked "So much for global warming".  Don'r be an idiot like he is.  He opposes anything that will hurt the petroleum industries because he needs their money.  He could not explain climate change because he know very little about anything but chiseling money out of people.  And millions of gullible people think he has their interests ahead of his own selfishness.  That and watching Fox "news" are the biggest social problem facing America.

In layman's terms, that's the difference between climate and weather.  Another way to think about it is warming doesn't mean a rise in temperature in the short term - the icebergs are melting.

Let's say you put a bunch of ice cubes in an icebox.  They will keep the temperature low even if the outside gets warmer as the ice melts to absorb the heat.  Once the ice is all melted, there will be nothing to keep the temperature down anymore.

The jet stream that keeps the cold air, ie polar vortex, up north has gotten more "wobbly". One of the theories is that the increased temperature at the pole makes the temperate between the two air masses closer to each other and so causes less tension. Think arm wrestling. An equal amount of pressure and their hands go nowhere. If their strength starts fading and there is less pressure from one or another, their hands start moving back and forth.

Normally, the polar vortex travels in a circle around the north pole, keeping the coldest air bottled up. When a warm air mass pushes against it, it deforms the circle, making some areas warmer than usual and other areas colder than usual.

Another fake question from The Twin Trolls.  These paid alarmists are playing the naive card, trying to make science realists look dumb.

Believe what the “experts” tell you, not what you are actually observing. /sarc

That's something I have also always thought.
