How can Jews be considered Jewish by mother if their tribe is inherited by father? ?

For example, a Levite is considered Levite if the father is a Levite. So, if someone has a Jewish mother and a Gentile father he is a Jew without Tribe? Can you Jews explain better how it works? I like Israel, I really do. But I find this fact contradictory.

It's by the father side, if a person is an Israelite. For Example, Rehoboam, son of Solomon, son of David, son of Jesse, from the Tribe of Judah. His mother was a Ammonite. Someone gave this a thumbs down and I came out the BIBLE.

    Hi Anonymous,

I don't know why a lot of people ask this kind of questions (I am not pointing you Anonymous), I feel that the people that asks and the people that answers both wants to underline the differences between races and ranking in their same own religion !!!

Who gives a damn what do you consider if his mother or grand mother or .... has a relation with a Muslim or a Jew !! grow up guys, stop the culture of segregation and Apartheid and you will see Zionism will disappear like Nazism and all Evil cultures.

Religious status and tribal affiliation are two separate things, that's why. There is no requirement in Judaism to be part of one of the Tribes of Israel, even though that's where many Jewish people have their roots.

Think of it this way: Abraham was the first Jew and he is not a part of one of those tribes. Makes sense, as the progenitors of those tribes are his great-grandchildren! By extension, we can exclude Sarah, Isaac, Rebecca, Jacob, Leah and Rachel too: These Jews all predate the Tribes as well. And given as they're labeled the matriarchs and patriarchs of Judaism, that should really show that tribal status means nothing when defining someone as a Jew. It's even somewhat the point when reading about Ruth, a convert who is an ancestress to David, the Jewish king who is said to be the most beloved. She did move into tribal lands, but wasn't of the tribe to begin with.

Tribal affiliation means little to nothing in modern Judaism anyway. We may still use the terminology in places, but it's more symbolic. Often I hear Jews call themselves "members of the tribe" - but notice it's singular, not differentiating between the different tribes. It's just an affectionate name for ourselves, drawing upon some of our history yet meant to be inclusive for all. It's also worth considering that the priestly tribe - the Levites - don't hold a monopoly on being the clergy anymore, as ANY Jew can become a Rabbi, member of the Tribe of Levi or not. Lastly, I should point out there were probably ways to be adopted into a tribe but that's either been long forgotten or simply not taught to Jews like myself, since it's no longer relevant to modern Jewish living.

Because A is not the same as B.

    Lineage is one thing.

    Jewish status is another.

Lineage dictates what tribe you belong to, whether one is a Cohen (from Aaron), or whether one is a king (from David).

Status as a Jew is a separate concept.

Someone who has a Jewish mother and Gentile father is similar in that respect to a convert. Neither are members of a specific tribe, but they are members of the Jewish nation.
