Is my hamster sleeping too much?

I have a Syrian hamster who is about a year old. He sleeps from around 7AM to 10:30PM. In the summer he would wake up around 9PM, sometimes even 8PM. When he's up, he spends most of his time on his wheel but also a fair amount of time grooming himself and chewing on his wooden toys. He seems perfectly healthy, he hasn't shown any signs of illness and his behaviours are normal. He gets up a few times a day for a drink of water, but he usually goes right back to sleep in his burrow. Is he sleeping too much? If so, how can I get him to naturally wake up earlier?

He just wants to sleep all day and play all night .  Might wake up to play with you, but if he is happy don't worry.
     We had a squeaky wheel that spin all night and was still all day.

Congratulations, you have a pet that you didn’t do I any research at all about, don’t know their habits yet your worrying about it’s health after the fact.

This type of rodent is nocturnal, which means they pretty much rest and sleep during they day and become active at sunset getting ready to forage for food and move about in the mask of darkness when less predators are able to see them efficiently.  They still worry about being seen by owls so they prefer to tunnel and hunker down close to the ground along wood piles and rocks etc... anything that helps mark their movement and make it harder to be caught then eaten,

This is why so many hamsters wake up about sunset and are are running and tunneling in the dark.

It’s normal for your pet be tired and sluggish after sunrise.  They are not active during the day,   don’t usually eat much during the day, they do drink when thirsty but prefer to make a nest and sleep the day away.
