Do you have to self quarantine if you go from Belgium to France and then U.K.?  ?

My partner and I are in France for the day, in Lille and we have a possible business meeting in Bruges, but the U.K. has a quarantine rule for people coming back from Belgium, but not sure how it works for if we go to Belgium tomorrow, come back to France in the evening and go back to the U.K. the following day. Would we still need to self isolate?

Yes, you would need to self isolate in that case.

Yes - if you've been in Belgium, you need to quarantine on return.

    Obviously

Why would stopping over in France change the fact you've visited Belgium, which is on the quarantine list?

Yes.  If you've been in any country that requires quarantine in the 14 days before you return to the UK, you have to quarantine for the rest of the 14 days.  So you're in Lille, you step over the Belgian border for an instant, then return to France for a further 5 days before you return to the UK.  You then have to quarantine for 9 days.
