There are many reasons to be infertile.

It is possible to ovulate but have blocked tubes - the egg never reaches the uterus and sperm never reaches the egg.   That happened to a friend of mine.  She was trying to get pregnant but not having any success and when they checked everything, they discovered her tubes were completely blocked and nothing could get through.

Possibly, because infertile does not mean sterile. "Infertile" is also a very broad term, and there can be many, many reasons for it. Having anovulatory cycles, irregular cycles, or poor quality eggs are only a few of them. Also the problem is just as likely to lie with the male partner as the female partner, and in about 20% of cases it lies with both.
