I'm trying to hook up a home stereo system in my car and it isn't working properly, suggestions?

I have a Tripp Lite 120v power inverter so it should be getting enough power. The 2 subs in the back wont kick and there is a loud annoying buzzing that wasn't present when I had it hooked up in home.

  • You FAILED telling us how the power inverter is connected. It's best connecting it directly to the battery. The best guess we can make is that maybe you're not receiving the proper voltage...or maybe you have a poor grounding...or maybe you have a small grounding wire...or maybe you didn't scratch the paint off from the chassis when you grounded the wire...

You need a longer power cable.

The buzzing is from the ignition system of the car. The only thing you could do to try to get rid of the interference is to connect the inverter directly to the battery. But generally, home stereos don't work well in a car. They aren't made to handle any vibration.

My guess is the inverter is producing a square or saw toothed sine wave that a transformer in your stereo can't use to produce the proper voltage.

Too many power conversions are going on. Alternator produces AC, converts to DC to charge battery, inverter changes back to AC, stereo power supply changes it back to DC.

Just because you HAVE a power inverter in your truck DOES NOT mean it's got enough power to drive a 120 Volt home stereo system. A lot of mobile stereo systems need an extra battery or two to provide enough power to drive the amplifier that makes the subwoofers "kick"

Tell us what model Tripp Lite inverter it is. They make about 50 different ones. And tell us what car you have and what equipment you are trying to run (amps and speakers) and their model numbers. That way we can look at the specs and see if what you're trying to do is even practical. It probably isn't. With subwoofers in your system especially, the alternator in your car probably doesn't supply enough power to run the inverter and your equipment properly . The buzzing is probably a grounding issue but some inverters don't have any 60hz filters for audio applications. You'd probably be way better off buying a system designed for use in a car.

the buzz is from a bad ground

    suggestions? LMAO

Drill some holes in the trunk lid and mount a gas powered generator on there. That way, you can also put a small refrigerator and an air conditioner in the back. Make sure you save room for a big screen TV too.
